Living up to its pioneering spirit, Sonnenerde is looking to expand its successful biochar operations with the financial support of both prepayments (Pre-CORCs) and advanced commitments.
The project Pyrodry will entail a new biochar production facility that will help Sonnenerde meet the growing demand for its high-quality biochar that has the potential to reach annual production of over 3,000 CORCs (3,000 tons of removed CO2).
Set to begin construction in autumn 2022, the facility will also include a solar PV plant for producing electricity for the pyrolysis process.
The project has undergone a rigorous Commercial & Technical Assessment by Puro.earth, confirming its viability in producing future CORCs. This is an opportunity for climate-conscious companies to actively participate in the scale-up of the carbon removal market with an established company looking to take biochar production to the next level.
Co benefits of our biochar and our biochar based products
- Long term carbon storage (SDG 13 - Climate action)
- Increased soil fertility (SDG 2 – Zero hunger)
- Increased water storage capacity of soil and reduced soil erosion (SDG 2 – Zero hunger)
- Biochar caches nutrients in plant-available form, serves as habitat for soil microorganisms and promotes the formation of humus (SDG 2 – Zero hunger, SDG 15 – Life on land)
- Reduced need for fertilizers and chemical treatment of soils (SDG 3 - Good health and well-being)
- Decreased nutrient outflow into groundwater (SDG 6 - Clean water and sanitation, SDG 14 – Life below water)
- Healthy urban trees with use of biochar (SDG 11 – Sustainable cities and communities)
Co benefits of biochar production with Sonnenerde Pyrodry
- Electric energy for our biochar production plant is provided by a photovoltaic system. The waste heat from pyrolysis is recovered and used in other processes. (SDG 7 – Affordable and clean energy, SDG 13 - Climate action)
- Upcycling – biogenic wastes are transformed to a high-quality product (SDG 12 -Responsible consumption and production)
A true pioneer with over a decade of experience in biochar production, Sonnenerde was one of the first to operate a biochar production plant in Europe approved under the EU waste law regulations back in 2012 and has been successfully producing high-quality biochar and other soil improvement products ever since.
Taking nature as their example, Sonnenerde operates a circular economy. Their biochar is produced from biogenic wastes (grain husks, sunflower pods and pulp mud), the electric power needed for producing the pyrolysis process is provided by a solar PV plant and then the biochar is used as additive for compost or slurry.
