About the project

Enhanced rock weathering based on olivine and basalt scattered on marginal land in Achter Paranam, Surinam. Surinam is well suited for olivine projects, because weathering works best in tropical, humid circumstances. This project creates work in Guyana and Surinam for sourcing, transporting and scattering of olivine.

Olivine and basalt weathers with CO2 and results in magnesiumbicarbonate and silica.  The binding of CO2 is a slow, but steady, natural process. However, the weathering can be accelerated by applying it in a specific way. This rock-solid CO2 storage has geological permanence like many other minerals.

Most carbon removal takes place in the first years of the project. In the first three years 350 tonnes per year are net-removed, whereas in the last 3 years 152 tonnes per year. Please refer to the Excel file.

This project follows the recommendations of the Netherlands' RIVM for the heavy metals threshold limits.

Funding for this project was cancelled by the supplier on 17 August, 2023.

Key Project Data

  • Type of project info
    New facility or site
  • Carbon removal methodology info
    Enhanced Rock Weathering
  • Durability of carbon removal in years (number) info
    1000000
  • Co-benefits info
More than half of the carbon credit revenues remain in the developing countries Surinam and Guyana, benefiting the local economy and population.

We are working together with TNO, The Netherlands' Institute for Applied Scientific Research. Research will be conducted that helps improve this method of carbon removal. One of the main subjects will be the weathering speed dependencies, such as soil components (organic matter, pH-value).
  • Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) info
  • Production facility country info
    Surinam
  • Site visits are possible info
    Yes
  • Certifications or assessments info
Memorandum of Understanding with TNO, The Netherlands' Institute for Applied Scientific Research.

Accepted to EU/EIT Climate-KIC accelerator program "Carbon Removal CLIMAccelerator".

    Puro.earth certification pending.
  • Project start date info
    01/01/2022
  • Expected certification and issuance date info
    01/01/2022
  • Annual carbon removal capacity in tCO2e (number) info
    250
  • Additionality info
This project is fully additional financially, because it has no other revenue streams than carbon removal revenue. This project will not be implemented without these commitments.

About the supplier

Carbon Neutral Initiative

We are a project developer working on enhanced weathering. We apply both olivine and basalt. In order to optimize carbon removal of this method, we are working together with TNO, The Netherlands' Institute of Applied Scientific Research.

The Carbon Neutral Initiative is part of the EU-funded Carbon Removal CLIMAccelerator.
