About the project

Located in Ireland, Dowmann build and operate factories to produce biochar from locally available biomass resources such as green waste and agricultural residues.

For humanity to limit global temperature rise it is no longer enough to merely reduce our carbon emissions. We must also remove most of the historic carbon already emitted into the atmosphere. Failure to do so will have catastrophic consequences for human life on our planet. To achieve this, the world needs viable carbon negative solutions.

One such viable solution is Biochar.

It is produced by heating biomass at high temperatures without oxygen. This carbonises the biomass, concentrating it's carbon content, effectively "locks" it in place. Biochar contains up to 90% fixed carbon by weight and when returned to the soil it can improve the quality, mineral & water retention properties of the soil.

Biochar production is a highly efficient method of shifting carbon from "source to soil" where it can remain locked away for many centuries.

    SUSTAINABILITY
Making a carbon removal product is inherently a positive thing for humanity. How we make that product provides further opportunities for Dowmann to leave a positive mark on the world. The principles of sustainability & social justice are core to how Dowmann does business.

Our goal is to actively divert and re-purpose "waste" or residue biomass to purposeful environmental benefits.

    SOCIAL JUSTICE
Each Dowmann factory provides 4 full-time, general operative level jobs. These roles are relatively basic in their operation and do not require high education levels. Our goal is to fill many of these positions from marginalised and vulnerable socio-economic groups.

We commit to paying our colleagues in these jobs the living wage and a decent benefits package to ensure they can provide comfort and opportunity for themselves and their dependents.

    EDUCATION
Our staff will be key to the successful delivery of the Dowmann mission. Education and training opportunities will be continuously offered with our enduring policy of ideally promoting from within.

Promotion from general operative to senior management should be a serious possibility. External education of key groups such as school children and local groups will form a key part of our engagement with the world.

    ADDITIONAL BY-PRODUCTS
The production process generates some additional useful biochemicals and synthesis gases which are captured and can be further refined or used for process energy. A funded body of work is currently underway to fully investigate various use cases for the by-products.

About the supplier

Dowmann

Dowmann is an Irish company based in Dublin.

For humanity to limit global temperature rise it is no longer enough to merely reduce our carbon emissions. We must also remove most of the carbon already emitted into the atmosphere. Failure to do so will have catastrophic consequences for human life on our planet.

The challenge is the lack of rapid, certifiable & scalable methods for producing carbon reductions.

VERSATILITY

Dowmann can accept nearly all plant material types. This gives us access to a broader supply & volume of raw materials to produce our biochar, including waste residues.

EFFICIENCY

Our low-energy, pre-processing steps optimally prepare the plant material prior to pyrolysis. This significantly reduces the amount of energy required to convert fresh plant material into carbon rich biochar.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Each Dowmann factory provides 10 full-time, permanent general operative level jobs. Our goal is to fill many of these positions from marginalised and vulnerable socio-economic groups e.g. refugees in direct provision, travelling community, long-term unemployed & former offenders.

We will commit to paying our colleagues in these jobs the living wage and a decent benefits package to ensure they can provide comfort and opportunity for themselves and their dependents

INNOVATION

Now, more than ever, the world needs innovation and creative thinking to drive down global carbon emissions.

Extracting biochemicals from the pyrolysis by-products while making biochar, is one opportunity currently in research at Dowmann.

Extracting further value from the processing chain will help to reduce the cost per tonne of Biochar produced and help to scale the industry.

We have a funded R&D project in collaboration with a 3rd level research institute to further explore the opportunities available in this space.
