About the project

Heartland Greenway is a Navigator CO₂ proposed carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) system that will provide industrial emitting facilities in five Midwest states with a long-term and cost-effective means to reduce their carbon footprint. Heartland Greenway will reach industrial customers in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota. Operations are expected to be phased in early 2025.

The pipeline gathering and sequestration project will capture CO₂ that is produced as a byproduct of the manufacturing process and safely transport the captured CO₂ over a newly built 1,300-mile pipeline network to either: injection wells for permanent underground storage in the Mt. Simon formation of Illinois; or terminal assets that will make the CO₂ available for value-added commercial industrial uses.

Navigator’s project is one of the first large-scale, commercially viable carbon capture projects to be developed in the United States. Once fully expanded, Heartland Greenway will have the ability to remove 15 million metric tons of biogenic CO₂ every year: the annual volume equivalent to the emissions from approximately 3.3 million gas-powered cars or CO₂ sequestered by 17.8 million acres of US forests.

  • Certifications or assessments info
Registered and verified under Puro.earth's Geologically Stored Carbon methodology.

This methodology sets the requirements for eligibility and quantification of the Net CO2 Removal impact
achieved by the activity of carbon sequestration and geo-storage, where CO₂ is captured from the atmosphere
and stored permanently into deep geological formations by a CO2 Removal Supplier.

Net CO₂ removal impact is calculated as net carbon balance of emissions and storages. The gross carbon
increase in the geo-storage must be larger than the GHG emissions caused over life-time of the activity.

This project captures CO₂ from the atmosphere by means of biogenic CO₂ capture, where
plants have originally captured CO₂ from the atmosphere through photosynthesis.
  • Project start date info
    01/04/2024
  • Expected certification and issuance date info
    01/01/2026
  • Annual carbon removal capacity in tCO2e (number) info
    1000000
  • Additionality info
Contributions from CORC monetization will help provide the financing needed to construct the system, as the expected cost to develop and construct exceeds $6 billion dollars.

Demand permitting - additional CORC volumes for the VCM will be considered, as removals can ultimately be scaled to multi-megaton per annum output levels.
