About the project

HUSK is the world’s first biochar business to install pyrolysis technology into rice mills to transform a low value agricultural byproduct (rice husk) into affordable biochar based fertilizers for smallholder farmers.  This biomass would otherwise be burnt or left to decompose, emitting CO2 to the atmosphere.

One third of the world’s soils are currently degraded, and adding biochar to the soil is a highly effective means of long term soil regeneration. Due to its carbon-rich and highly porous structure biochar improves the soil’s water holding capacity, reduces nutrient run-off and stimulates microbial growth, all resulting in increased crop productivity.  HUSK’s biochar based fertilizers have a positive return on investment for smallholder farmers, boosting yields and reducing their use of chemicals and input costs. The affordable price to smallholder farmers is made possible by the CORC revenue.

HUSK has been a member of the International Biochar Initiative since 2019, was the first biochar company outside Europe and the US to be certified with the EBC C-Sink in 2020, and in 2021 was awarded the Innovation Against Poverty prize from the Swedish government.

HUSK is building a blueprint biochar business in Cambodia to be replicated across emerging economies.

    100% of the revenues from sales of CORCs will be channeled into increasing our production capacity in Cambodia which in turn will enable us to reach economies of scale that can be passed on to our clients, smallholder farmers. The revenue from our carbon credits will be targeted at the following key milestones to enabling us to make carbon based fertilizers affordable in emerging economies, where farmers may earn less than 10 USD per day.  The upfront payment of pre-CORC will be used as follows:

    • Purchase and installation of state of the art continuous flow pyrolysis unit with capacity to produce 2600 Tonnes of biochar per year 
    • Purchase and installation of ancillary equipment for processsing high quality carbon based fertilizers
    • Recruitment of experienced operations and sales staff to build an effective and impactful team in Cambodia 
    • Additional contingency to cover the cashflow shortfalls typical of the agricultural value chain 
    In the medium term and after initial installation costs 100€ per Tonne of CO2e removed (net) enables us to make long term soil improvement products accessible and viable for smallholder farmers. Without this revenue stream we would not be able to offer a viable alternative to the existing chemical fertilizers on the market.

About the supplier


HUSK is an impact driven business with a mission to regenerate soils and improve smallholder's livelihoods. We transform agricultural waste products into biochar based fertilizers to improve soil health, boost crop yields and draw down carbon into the soil, where it remains for hundreds of years.

HUSK was founded in 2017 by Heloise Buckland and Carol Rius, who bring together over 20 years experience in social innovation and international business and have built an international team committed to building soil, improving lives and sinking carbon.  The team have been transforming rice husk into biochar and carbon based fertilizers in Cambodia since 2019 and are now ready to scale up operations to reach a far greater number of farmers.  

HUSK is one of the first biochar companies outside the EU and US to be certified as a Carbon Sink by the European Biochar Certificate and to date has regenerated 228 hectares of degraded land, removed 381 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere and had a positive impact on 1,500 smallholder farmer lives in Cambodia.
