Tieto (now TietoEvry) is a leading Nordic digital services company with presence in almost 20 countries. Their major carbon dioxide emissions result from business travelling, premises and data centres. The company believes long-term business success requires integrating environmental sustainability across their operations, and with a global team of 15,000 employees, Tieto is continuously examining new ways to reduce their climate impact.
Tieto had already met their Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Scope 2 indirect energy goals two years ahead of schedule. “The primary goal of companies and other organizations is to reduce the environmental impacts of their operations. In addition, we must actively look for new means of compensating our impacts. We wanted to explore our options to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Reducing, combined with removing, will be crucial when we start to look at future ambitions possibly including Scope 3 goal settings”, says Ida Bohman-Steenberg, Head of Sustainability at Tieto.
Tieto first reduced the flights of consultants by the amount equivalent to 11 000 flights between Finland and Sweden through their savings program. A share of the remaining emissions were neutralized using Puro’s CORCs as part of the pilot.
“Puro.earth and their innovative CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs) presented an opportunity to actually capture and store carbon emissions caused by employee travel. We are happy to be able to accelerate this type of market innovation now that it's so urgently needed”, says Bohman-Steenberg.
