Solutions for sustainability and optimization

Simosol Oy is a global leader in providing services and IT solutions for efficient and smart forest resource management based in Finland. Our solutions integrate carbon into the heart of forest resource management planning enabling cost-efficient services such as periodical carbon impact accounting and strategic carbon planning.

Our periodical carbon impact accounting solution features include systematic quantification of carbon impact from forest and wood products. The resulting carbon balance is often integrated in annual reporting of forest industries, large-scale forest managers and institutional investors. Strategic carbon planning integrates carbon to forest management planning. Our solutions enable dynamic scenario and risk analysis e.g. for optimizing carbon impact while providing sufficient cash flows from timber sales. We also provide reliable third-party estimates of carbon credit potential of forestry projects which can be expanded into carbon credit due-diligence assignments or pre-feasibility studies.

Our solutions support more than 15 million hectares valued at EUR 40 billion, and we have active projects in Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia.

We offer:

  • Accurate estimations of carbon flows in the forests and in changing landscapes.
  • Extended carbon analyses to consider a life cycle analysis of wood products.
  • Analyses and strategic support to understand how different forest management scenarios affect the carbon balance.
  • Eye-catching interfaces for visualizing carbon flows.

CarboScen has been used in various countries in South America, Africa and Asia for analyzing the carbon balance in dynamic landscapes. This application was developed by Simosol, together with the Viikki Tropical Research Institute at the University of Helsinki and CIFOR.

To the surprise of many, most of the carbon in a forest is not contained in the trees or other vegetation, but underground. Therefore, modelling the soil-carbon balance is very important. We have been working with the Finnish Meteorological Institute to develop the user interface for the soil-carbon model Yasso.
