Tapovanam Biochar – Prakruthi is a climate-positive initiative that transforms crop residues, primarily cotton stalks, into biochar — a stable form of carbon that can be stored safely in soil for centuries. The project tackles the widespread challenge of residue burning by turning agricultural waste into a valuable product that enriches soil, enhances water retention, and improves long-term farm productivity. Our biochar is produced through a clean and energy-efficient pyrolysis process, where the gases released are reused to power the system itself, minimizing emissions. The resulting biochar is further developed into a biofertilizer that supports regenerative agriculture and reduces dependence on chemical inputs. Beyond removing carbon from the atmosphere, Prakruthi contributes to rural livelihoods by creating a new income stream for farmers and promoting circular economy practices. The project reflects Tapovanam’s vision to build sustainable, low-carbon farming systems while contributing meaningfully to global carbon removal and soil restoration goals.

Eion’s Twinterstellar 3021 enhanced rock weathering (ERW) project has been developed to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere safely, permanently, and verifiably. In 2023, Eion and its partners sourced, transported, and spread ~15,000 tonnes of pulverized olivine on ~9,000 acres of agricultural lands (i.e., on pasture and row crops, specifically corn and soybean fields) in the state of Mississippi, with a few fields across the state line in Louisiana. The olivine was sourced from two quarries: the Twin Sisters Mountain in Washington State and a quarry located in Åheim, Norway. The project uses existing agricultural infrastructure, and our measurement techniques seamlessly integrate with standard agricultural practices, imposing no new burdens on our farm partners. We accelerate the weathering cycle by pulverizing olivine (i.e., greater surface area = faster reaction), a silicate mineral with high carbon dioxide removal (CDR) potential and crystal structure that weathers rapidly. The pulverized olivine has a soil alkalizing value that is comparable to conventional ag lime, a common agricultural input that balances soil pH (helping to maintain healthy soil and agricultural productivity). Once the olivine has been applied, nature takes over. Rain and soil acidity enable the olivine to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and ultimately transport it to the ocean. The Twinterstellar 3021 carbon project fits within the scope of Puro’s Enhanced Rock Weathering Methodology; it meets all requirements and was designed, developed, and implemented adhering to a principle of conservativeness. Eion utilizes a direct measurement approach to quantify the atmospheric carbon dioxide that has been captured and sequestered through the soil-air-rock interface. The approach fundamentally draws upon the accumulation of semi-mobile tracers in the topsoil (i.e., nickel) and the simultaneous depletion of base cations as a clear proxy for alkalinity fluxes (i.e., magnesium) induced by weathering.

Uisa is one of the largest and most integrated biorefineries in Brazil. It operates using a business model that transforms renewable raw materials and their byproducts into food, biofuels, clean energy, organic fertilizers, and animal feed products. Located in Mato Grosso, with a strong commercial presence in the Midwest and North regions of the country, its philosophy is to maximize sustainability, reducing the environmental impacts of its processes through the full use of biomass, promoting a positive social impact in the communities where it operates. Uisa generates more than 3,000 jobs and has strong social partnerships. It supports Florescer Ação Social, an institution that develops projects focused on the human, social, educational, and cultural development of children, adolescents, and adults in the communities of Denise, Nova Olímpia, and the Assari District, in Barra do Bugres, Mato Grosso. As part of its efforts to become a decarbonization platform in the heart of Brazil, Uisa is implementing a bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) project integrated with its bioethanol production to capture the highly concentrated biogenic CO2 stream. After concentration and dehydration, the CO2 will be transported to a future injection site in the Parecis Basin, located approximately 25 km from Uisa's industrial facilities. The project is currently in the final geological investigation phase, with well drilling efforts expected to begin soon, with full operation expected in 2029. Approximately 260,000 tons of CO2 will be stored annually, considering the plant's current capacity, with the potential for injection of up to 550,000 tons of CO2, considering future expansions. By producing biofuels (i.e. ethanol and biomethane) with integrated BECCS, Uisa will provide high-integrity carbon credits for hard-to-abate sectors and/or for the production of carbon-negative biofuels, the latter upon retirement of the corresponding credits by Uisa.

In this project, five of BioCirc’s facilities - Vinkel, Vesthimmerland, Grønhøj, Favrskov, and Haderslev - will be retrofitted with carbon capture and liquefaction systems. Captured CO₂ will be transported via CO2 semi-trailers to an interim storage hub in the Port of Esbjerg. From there, it will be shipped for permanent geological storage in the Greensand Future Project - a Danish offshore CO₂ storage site in a depleted North Sea oil field at around 1,800 m depth. The project will capture and permanently store approximately 138,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ per year, corresponding to more than 800,000 tonnes of net carbon dioxide removals (CDR) between 2026 and 2032, after accounting for life-cycle emissions. BioCirc’s BECCS project is among the first to combine biomethane production with permanent carbon storage under the Puro Standard. By integrating carbon capture into established biogas infrastructure, BioCirc provides a scalable and replicable model for negative emissions compatible with circular bioeconomy principles. Radial Timber Australia (RTA), a family-owned timber company based in Yarram, Victoria, specializes in sustainable cultivation, milling, and distributing durable Victorian hardwood products such as decking and weatherboards. Committed to environmental responsibility, RTA sources regrowth or plantation-grown timber and employs a circular economy model to minimize waste and maximize resource recovery. In 2024, RTA enhanced its sustainability efforts by investing in Earth Systems' CPP500 pyrolysis technology to convert wood waste from their operations—sawdust, shavings, peelings, and scrap—into biochar. This biochar, produced at an estimated 500 tons annually, is used as a soil amendment within RTA’s plantations, improving soil health and reducing waste. The facility began operations in July 2024 and is scaling up to full capacity, with plans to add two more units by 2026. The project's financial sustainability hinges on carbon credit sales under the Puro.Earth standard, as the regional biochar market develops. Initially, biochar is applied within RTA’s plantations, supporting a closed-loop approach that reduces emissions, enhances soil quality, and promotes renewable energy. By integrating sustainable timber production with biochar-based carbon sequestration, RTA is pioneering climate-positive forestry, advancing ecological resilience and economic viability through responsible land management.

By converting rice husk waste—a by-product of Cambodia’s extensive rice cultivation—into 1500 tons of high-quality biochar monthly, this project is designed to address critical environmental and agricultural challenges. The facility will be positioned to deliver substantial impact across both environmental and economic dimensions. To support financial planning and ensure smooth progress through the pre-production phase, GSAD Cambodia would appreciate consideration of a five-month advance on CORCs, which would bridge early operational costs and accelerate implementation. By promoting circular resource use and organic soil enhancement, the initiative will significantly improve environmental stewardship while boosting agricultural productivity across the region. The project aligns with national climate and agricultural goals, offering a scalable model for sustainable development. GSAD Cambodia’s approach is deeply rooted in collaboration and community engagement. The company has built a strong reputation for working closely with local farmers, agricultural cooperatives, and government stakeholders to ensure the initiative delivers tangible benefits to rural communities. This inclusive model reinforces long-term sustainability and strengthens the project's social license to operate. Central to the initiative is a high-capacity facility capable of producing 1,500 tons of biochar per month by processing 3,000 tons of rice husks. These husks are derived from the province’s annual output of approximately 1.5 million tons of paddy rice, which generates an estimated 450,000 tons of husk waste. By diverting this biomass from open burning—a major source of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution—the project addresses pressing waste management and climate challenges while creating a valuable agricultural input. The facility will be equipped with Beston BST-50s Biochar Reactor, certified under the Puro standard. Manufactured by Beston, a leading Chinese company known for its innovation and reliability in biomass processing, the BST-50s has been vetted and shown to meet key technical requirements including the ability to produce biochar with a hydrogen-to-organic carbon (H/Corg) ratio of 0.29—well below the 0.7 threshold required for carbon credit eligibility. GSAD Cambodia’s multinational executive team brings over a century of combined experience in agribusiness, operations, human resources, finance, and sustainability. Their leadership underpins the project’s success, ensuring rigorous execution, operational excellence, and strategic alignment with both local needs and global climate objectives. Takachar’s U.S.-based carbon removal project uses a fleet of high-tech, decentralized reactors (known as Takavators) to convert excess crop and forest biomass—starting with wildfire-prone residues in the West Coast such as dead trees, slash, and other fire-prone materials otherwise burned in open air—into stable biochar for local agricultural use. These mobile systems are engineered for industrial-scale performance, offering continuous operation, precision controls, strict adherence to and quantification of emission requirements, and verifiable carbon sequestration. Unlike artisanal methods, Takachar’s technology meets rigorous monitoring, reporting, and verification standards and is third-party audited under the Puro Standard. This project plays an important role in wildfire risk reduction. By partnering directly with local forest landowners and agencies, Takachar helps remove hazardous fuels from high-risk areas—particularly where overgrown vegetation and legacy fire suppression have left forests vulnerable. The resulting biochar permanently stores carbon while enabling safer, healthier forests. The project utilizes a continuous Verenovo slow-pyrolysis reactor operating at temperatures between 450 °C and 550 °C, with residence times of approximately 15 minutes. This process transforms a previously under-utilized lignocellulosic residue, otherwise destined for incineration, into a stable, carbon-rich material capable of sequestering biogenic carbon for hundreds of years. Produced biochar will be characterized for key environmental and agronomic parameters, including C-content, H/Corg ratio, PAH and heavy-metal concentrations, to ensure compliance with international biochar quality standards. Biofine collaborates with the University of Maine’s Forest Bioproducts Research Institute to optimize soil application practices and assess long-term benefits to soil health. Through this circular approach, the project diverts waste, reduces emissions, and delivers verified carbon removals while supporting regional sustainability and bioeconomy development in Maine.

Under Project Evergreen, manually harvested encroacher bush is processed through a structured, end-to-end workflow designed to maximize environmental impact and carbon traceability. Biomass is weighed, prepared, and pyrolyzed in specialized units, converting it into biochar while permanently sequestering carbon. The biochar is then chipped, inoculated if applicable, and stored or applied in line with MRV standards to ensure verified climate benefits and soil enhancement. To support local livelihoods, ecoX’s operations prioritize job creation, skills training, and community engagement- particularly in regions with unemployment rates exceeding 90%. The company is currently establishing a processing hub in Kalkfeld and has secured property for its first facility, with plans to scale to a new project three times the current size in the coming months.

EcoFix Kenya and Terraton Industrial are developing a new biochar production facility in Nanyuki, Kenya, designed to convert croton nut husks into stable biochar for long-term carbon removal and soil restoration. EcoFix has a strong history of partnering with more than 6,000 smallholder farmers across Kenya to create new markets for croton nuts, which are pressed into natural oils for use in soap and shampoo that are then sold in local markets. The waste seedcake is sold as animal feed, and some of the remaining croton nut husk is converted to compost. By transforming this abundant croton nut husk waste stream into durable biochar, the project not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also generates valuable co-benefits for rural communities, ecosystems, and soil fertility. The facility will use a newly manufactured Dingli 4-ton-per-hour biomass carbonization unit, a rotary kiln pyrolyzer capable of operating at 550–650°C with a residence time of 22–25 minutes. This single-site project is expected to remove an estimated 7,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, leading to the removal of an estimated 82,000 tonnes of CO2 over a 10-year period. The biochar produced will primarily be blended with compost and applied to croplands by local farmers, many of whom already supply croton nuts to EcoFix. In addition, the project is in discussions with larger local farms to integrate biochar distribution into the existing organic fertilizer applications. These pathways ensure that the biochar will be applied to eligible end uses where it improves soil fertility, nutrient retention, and water-holding capacity. Farmers will benefit directly through improved yields and reduced reliance on synthetic fertilizers, creating a circular model in which agricultural residues are returned to the land as a regenerative soil amendment. The project’s climate benefits are clear. Without the facility, croton nuts and husks would decompose or burn, contributing significantly to CO₂ and methane emissions. Through pyrolysis, those emissions are avoided, and the resulting biochar provides stable carbon storage for centuries. Terraton is a US technology company, a project developer, and the project owner for the EcoFix Kenya Biochar project. Terraton is building the first and only Carbon ERP (C-ERP) solution, focusing on making carbon dioxide removal businesses more accessible and scalable. As global emissions continue to rise, Terraton's mission is to facilitate the setup of thousands of carbon removal facilities in the coming decade, aiming to remove up to 10 gigatons of CO2 annually. The Reverse Coal project utilises High-Temperature Pyrolysis technology to convert fast growing biomass into high grade renewable energy and biochar that can be locked away in the ground for long term storage whilst at the same time restoring some of the UK’s most vital farmland. Based in England, Reverse Coal is part of a larger system change, exploring innovative land use approaches that tackle the dual challenges of climate change and food security on some of the UK’s most fertile farmland – drained lowland peat. These soils are crucial for growing food, yet they release disproportionately large amounts of greenhouse gases when farmed compared to regular soils. Greenhouse gas emissions from peatland accounts for ~3.5% of the UK’s total emissions. On average drained peat soils lose one centimetre of peat every year due to oxidisation, and this has been going on for the last 400 years! At Lapwing we are rethinking this problem by turning it into an opportunity. Through pyrolysis of biomass into biochar and renewable energy, biochar is buried in the ground in Lapwing’s patented Reverse Coal repository, locking away the carbon for greater permanence and building up the land lost over the last 400 years. In addition to long-term storage of biochar, the team is also exploring other opportunities to use biochar in other applications across agriculture, construction and environmental industries to support wider decarbonisation. The renewable energy generated from the facility is used in existing agricultural operations to support Lapwing decarbonise the current food production system, supporting UK food security. By turning degraded farmland into a climate asset, Reverse Coal represents a scalable, verifiable, and multi-benefit approach to carbon removal — one that aligns permanent sequestration with the future of sustainable agriculture in the UK.

Tellus – Plant I is a carbon removal project based in Piauí, Brazil. It converts residues from the processing of Copernicia prunifera (carnauba palm) leaves into high-quality biochar. This native Brazilian palm grows wild in the region and is not associated with palm oil production. Each year, rural communities sustainably harvest its leaves to extract a fine powder from the epicuticular layer of the foliage. The extraction is performed by machines that crush the leaves and draw the powder into large collection bags. The remaining biomass, the portion not captured in the bag, is left behind as residue and typically remains on the ground. Without intervention, this material would naturally decompose, releasing greenhouse gases and contributing to climate change. Our facility has the capacity to process over 35,000 tonnes of this biomass annually through controlled pyrolysis, producing a stable form of carbon that can remain in soils for hundreds of years. The resulting biochar is expected to be applied as an organic soil amendment, enhancing soil structure, microbial activity, nutrient retention, and water holding capacity, while ensuring long-term carbon sequestration. The project supports a circular and sustainable agricultural model: it reduces reliance on imported synthetic fertilizers, enhances productivity through improved soil function, and facilitates the transition to regenerative practices. It also creates local employment and strengthens rural value chains in a vulnerable region. By embedding carbon in soil and improving fertility, Tellus delivers lasting climate and agricultural benefits.
