The Brandon project operated by O.C.O Technology Limited focuses on the production of carbonated building materials for carbon capture and utilization. Situated at High Street, Brandon, Suffolk, UK IP27 0AX, the Brandon facility plays a significant role in the innovative process of converting CO₂ emissions into solid building materials. Through accelerated carbonation, CO₂ is reacted with alkali earth hydroxides and silicates to produce carbonated aggregate from waste materials. The manufacturing process at the Brandon facility involves blending different thermal residues, conditioning them with water, and exposing them to an elevated concentration of CO₂ to accelerate the carbonation process. This results in the production of carbonated aggregate with a verified carbon content of 144 kg of CO₂ per tonne of aggregate product. Compliance assessments, necessary permits, and verification activities ensure adherence to the Puro Standard General Rules and Carbonated Building Material Methodology. The Brandon project, like other O.C.O Technology Limited initiatives, exemplifies the company's commitment to sustainable carbon removal through innovative carbon capture and utilization techniques. Pyrocal is an Australian-owned engineering company designing and manufacturing industrial-scale biochar production systems using Continuous Carbonisation Technology (CCT). Founded in 2014, Pyrocal has invested heavily in research and development to optimise its system to recover energy and capture and store carbon by transforming waste agricultural and forestry biomass and biosolids into biochar. Manufactured in Australia, Pyrocal’s system utilises both pyrolysis and gasification and is one of the most advanced biochar production systems available globally. Pyrocal's multi-disciplinary team collaborate with clients worldwide to understand their specific requirements and deliver tailored solutions to achieve their objectives. Pyrocal’s system is capable of operating 24/7 and the thermal energy recovered can be used to provide process heat or be converted to electrical energy. Pyrocal’s most significant project to-date has been delivering Australia’s first biosolids gasification facility for the City of Logan, which opened in 2022. This multi award winning project resulted in operational cost savings of $1M per annum and a reduction in carbon emissions of 6,000 tonnes per annum. Pyrocal produces and sells biochar under the Terix brand and generates associated carbon removal credits (CORCs) that are certified by the world’s leading platform for engineered carbon removal, Puro.earth. The feedstock is pecan and macadmia nutshells sourced from the surrounding regions, showcasing to customers how a Pyrocal system functions in a circular economy model. This nutshell would otherwise be used for mulch, compost, animal feed or end up in landfill or be incinerated. With a CORC factor of between 2-3, Pyrocal's biochar removes 3,500-4,500 tons of CO2 per annum.
