About the project

In Puerto Rico, the weather can be very damaging to bamboo forests and settlements which grow along waterways and roadsides. Sometimes, fallen and broken bamboo even cause blockages in rivers. This can lead to flooding, erosion and other problems for local communities and the environment. The BioRestorative Ideas project in Puerto Rico will transform fallen, broken and problematic bamboo into biochar while creating about 20 high-quality local jobs.

The project should transform about 13,000 mtons of bamboo into 3000 mtons of biochar annually. The project will collect the bamboo, process it and sequester carbon through its transformation, right on the island. The resulting biochar will be used in different applications, including to better soils, in materials and in agriculture. The project is not going to use plantation bamboo, only residues which have to be managed by local authorities. Generally, this bamboo is burnt on site or exported to be burnt.

As a second phase of the project, BRi intends to transform biomass residues that are unusable following hurricanes and tropical storms which are devastating for the island. This will allow the population to generate energy, producing biochar which can help with poor soils, while cleaning up the community.

Key Project Data

  • Type of project info
    New facility or site
  • Carbon removal methodology info
    Biochar
  • Durability of carbon removal in years (number) info
    400
  • Co-benefits info
    • Provides 15-20 green jobs in rural communities where quality employment is scarce.
    • Provides a second life to waste biomass, usually burnt or left to decompose. Additionally, the project has successfully secured a right to take in residual biomass and waste from storm, such as the Ian hurricane.
    • The usage of this biomass clears waterways, roads and land affected by storms and whether events, as well as provides support to the local authorities for clean-up.
    • The biochar will be used in soils locally to promote local agriculture, soil health, sustainable practices and resilience of communities to adverse events. Additionally, some biochar will be used in poor soil areas, in building material to decrease the carbon footprint of these materials and some innovative applications sequestering carbon on a permanent basis.
    • The pyrolyzer is half-mobile, which allows it to move from one site to another to clean larger areas while emitting less.
    • This project is a flagship in the Carribean with the goal of inspiring decarbonization solutions and attracting investments in this region.
  • Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) info
  • Production facility country info
    Puerto Rico
  • Site visits are possible info
    Yes
  • Project start date info
    01/07/2022
  • Expected certification and issuance date info
    01/04/2023
  • Annual carbon removal capacity in tCO2e (number) info
    7000

The Bio-Restorative Ideas project relies heavily on CORCs to provide the necessarily income for the project to be financially feasible. Aside from CORCs, the project must sell biochar through diverse channels. Although the biochar market is well understood and mastered by the project developers, the price at which biochar can be sold in Puerto Rico is relatively low compared to other regions. For this reason, CORCs provide a useful and necessary marketable product. Additionally, the carbon projects allows the developers to accelerate the expansion of the first project into neighbouring areas of Puerto Rico and in the future, neighbouring islands, to achieve their mission of relieving islands from waste generated by invasive bamboo and damaging weather events. Finally, due to increases in global steel prices and financing (via interest rate) costs, amongst other factors, the need for CORCs to be generated has heightened to make this project viable.

    No
  • Implementation of this project is subject to permits (building, environmental, etc.) info
    No
  • Implementation of this project is subject to reaching minimum pre-CORC commitments info

About the supplier

BioRestorative Ideas

BioRestorative Ideas was formed to tackle challenges in Puerto Rico, notably the island's poor management of bamboo waste. The goal of BioRestorative Ideas is to supply environmental and sustainable solutions that will benefit Puerto Rico, its local communities and its biodiversity. It was also created to support the island clean ups post hurricanes and tropical storms, which are devastating for its people and its economy.

GECA Environnement is the carbon project developer and the manager for BioRestorative Ideas' carbon project. GECA does not own nor the carbon nor the physical project in Puerto Rico.

GECA is a consulting firm specialized in biochar and pyrolysis, as well as the carbon market.
