About the project

UNDO delivers ERW projects that permanently remove CO2, whilst delivering co-benefits for agricultural partners. We focus on basalt, as it has low levels of trace metals vs other silicates, whilst already delivering crop yield increase for agricultural partners of 16%.

Selected by Microsoft in 2023 for our first ERW purchase, UNDO has developed the infrastructure and operational capacity to scale enhanced rock weathering efficiently and accurately across global regions, whilst delivering significant co-benefits for our network of agricultural partners.

The pillars of UNDO’s operations are:

- Scalable, peer-reviewed science: UNDO’s MRV approach utilises the extensively peer-reviewed, one-dimensional transport model with proprietary additions to model the carbon dioxide removal of any specific operation across the globe, utilising local data inputs. UNDO’s measurement approach uses a range of in-field and field-adjacent techniques to measure weathering indicators, an approach which UNDO is able to replicate in each new region of interest to deliver MRV local to each new operation.

- High quality project data: UNDO’s proprietary ‘Newton’ data platform enables accurate project data to be collected in real-time across global operations. For our robust LCA approach, 'Newton' enables UNDO to track all operational data from quarry to field. All haulage and spreading operations are GPS tracked throughout their journey, with all emissions deducted at the point of verification. Newton also enables UNDO to track all rock mineralogy results, linking these to specific spreading volumes and locations, ensuring a high level of data accuracy throughout the MRV process, and for a single CORC to be able to be tracked back to a specific rock type spread on a specific field, for 100% data traceability.

- Scalable operations: UNDO are building a platform for gigatonne scale, which is what is required to maintain a liveable planet. To achieve this, we have built an operational partner model that allows for the efficient sourcing and spreading of basalt rock. UNDO has a global network of quarry partners, where basalt by-product has already been XRD & XRF tested for suitability. This supply is connected to a global network of approved agricultural partners who are in place to efficiently spread the basalt using existing farming machinery. All partners have access to Newton, enabling the 24/7 tracking of operational data.

- Global R&D: UNDO works with research institutions across the globe, such as Washington State University, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Newcastle University, and James Cook University. This ranges from co-development of new MRV techniques to extensive agronomic research to help deliver empirical evidence of the positive impact of the application of basalt on crop health.

UNDO’s initial project scope with Puro is to deliver 26,500t CORCs through a project in the UK. UNDO already has the operational capacity to scale beyond this where there is commercial demand from partners looking to secure access to high volumes of CORCs. In 2024, UNDO has the capacity to scale operations that will deliver in excess of 100,000 CORCs, which partners are already starting to secure in advance.

The CORC price listed of 247.75€ is an average blended price across 2024-2043 issuances.

    In addition to sequestering carbon dioxide, spreading crushed basalt on agricultural soils offers many co-benefits to soil health and crop production. UNDO's empirical research with partner universities in the UK is already showing a positive impact on crop yield of between 12-16%. The application of basalt to agricultural soils increases soil pH, and has been shown to boost populations of soil microbes, improve soil structure and increase plant productivity and yields, and increase plant resilience to pestilence (Swoboda et al., 2021). Basalt rocks are rich in minerals that release macro- and micro-nutrients as well as silicon, that are essential for plant growth.
