Green Hub 1 is the first project among a series of pyrolysis projects to be developed in the UK that will pyrolyse problematic waste biomass into biochar and green energy while sequestering carbon. The Green Hub series aims to deliver positive climate action through carbon removal, regenerative agriculture, green energy generation and curbing pollution. Located in Herefordshire, the project will target different streams waste biomass that are a potential threat to the environment. The green and arboricultural waste streams (like grass clippings, tree branches, and leaves) emit significant methane and CO2 emissions from current disposal methods like landfills, composting and anaerobic digestion. Furthermore, seasonal surges in green waste can overwhelm composting facilities, leading to inefficiencies, slower processing, and contamination of the compost, further reducing its quality. Some of these waste biomass streams are stored and directly applied on land, leading to polluted run-offs entering the river Wye, causing algal blooms and threatening the eco-system. Onnu has developed a unique pyrolysis machine in partnership with engineering firm Woodtek that will pyrolyse these different waste biomass streams. With a vertical design, the scalable C1000 can effectively pyrolyse huge quantities waste biomass and convert it into biochar, a stable, carbon-rich material which locks away the carbon rather than releasing it back into the atmosphere. The syngas released from the process is combusted to generate green energy. A robust emissions scrubber with a Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) ensures that no harmful gases are released into the atmosphere. The entire pyrolysis unit is fully automated with user-friendly HMI that aids in effective monitoring, tracking and controlling of the system to achieve maximum positive outcomes. The biochar produced from the process is a highly effective soil additive that can promote water and nutrient retention. Enhancing microbial activity while balancing the soil pH, it is crucial in implementing regenerative agricultural practices in the region. The excess heat energy left after satisfying the unit’s self-sufficiency and drying requirements is converted into green electricity, which is being utilized for powering data centres running gen-AI tasks.

Founded in Australia in 2005, the Fasera Group is a leader in sustainable agricultural carbon sequestration through our managed estates of Australian oil mallees and other eucalypt species to produce: • Eucalyptus oil • Carbon Dioxide Removal Certificates (CORCs) & Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) • Biochar; • Wood vinegar (a natural herbicide and bio-stimulant). Our plantations include thousands of hectares of mature mallee trees. Historically, these were difficult and costly to harvest using traditional forestry methods. Fasera has invested in innovative new harvest techniques and equipment, enabling us to harvest mature mallees much more cost-effectively and significantly increasing our oil mallee resources. The development of coppice regrowth – the increased regrowth of mallee tree biomass after each harvest - has been established as most effective for long term carbon sequestration. Shearing the trunk at ground level, encourages coppice regrowth leading to increased biomass growth, generating an unending cycle of increasing harvests. This process also results in considerably higher levels of carbon sequestration than if individual trees were left to mature, where carbon retention capacity peaks and then stabilises. The expansion of Fasera’s mallee oil processing facility and product range continued with the commissioning of a continuous pyrolysis plant in 2022. The plant is co-located with our oil distillery; it processes the spent mallee biomass remaining after the steam distillation to produce eucalyptus oil. At capacity, it will pyrolyse up to 5,000 tonnes of spent biomass to produce about 5,000 m3 of biochar per annum. The heat from the process is recycled and used in the steam distillation process. The biochar produced is distributed locally as a soil amendment and in ingredient in ruminant animal feed. Fasera has just completed filling and sealing our first Terrestrial Storage of Biomass chamber on our Canterbury Farm, Kulja, Western Australia. This chamber will generate CORCs under the PURO methodology and is the first chamber at site with the potential to generate 100,000 CORCs. www.fasera.com

In January 2020, a wildfire in Flinders Chase National Park on Kangaroo Island broke containment lines, burning more than 210,000 hectares. The fire devastated the island and damaged approximately 14,000 hectares of FSC-certified forestry plantation. This climate-related disaster resulted in approximately 4.5 million tonnes of burnt timber, which is no longer suitable for typical timber markets. The fire destroyed the canopy, leaving the outer layer of the trunks charred while the core remained mostly unburnt. If this wood were to be combusted or left to decay on-site, it would release substantial amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The standing burnt timber presents a fire and biodiversity risk and is being cleared. The default approach for managing the fire-damaged timber on Kangaroo Island has been open combustion. The Kangaroo Island Biochar Project proposes to convert the fire-damaged wood into biochar. By producing biochar, the project will generate carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits and demonstrate tangible climate benefits. Without the carbon finance from CDR, the project would not be economically feasible. The biochar produced will be utilized in various sectors, including agriculture and construction, catalyzing the biochar industry in Australia with the first commercial quantities of biochar available in the market. The project owner Re-Vi Group has engaged Biocare Projects to deliver this important and ambitious project. The Biocare team combines expertise in decarbonization, diffusion of cleantech innovations, agriculture, carbon advisory, pyrolysis engineering, chemistry, and biochar end-use, as well as project development. Biocare has developed its own technology stack that is both cost-effective and highly efficient at producing biochar with durable CDR characteristics. The core of the system is a slow pyrolysis double-layer rotating drum unit designed to deliver precise thermal control of between 550–700°C. It adheres to stringent safety protocols and the Puro.earth CDR biochar methodology. Biocare’s modular design is tailored for large projects, semi-mobile, and scalable to different sizes, with the system installed on Kangaroo Island capable of processing up to 40 tonnes of feedstock per hour. In partnership, Re-Vi Group and Biocare are investing heavily in the systems and processes required to scale CDR markets, drive meaningful climate action and support the recovery of one of Australia’s most unique destinations.

Project Overview: Woocache PBC has launched a pioneering pilot project for carbon dioxide removal located just outside of La Veta, Colorado. This project employs an innovative terrestrial biomass storage methodology, which involves burying high-hazard liability biomass to prevent it from decomposing rapidly and releasing carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. This biomass is collected as part of wildfire mitigation operations, which play a crucial role in reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfires in the region. Biomass Collection and Utilization: The biomass used in this project primarily consists of waste from wildfire mitigation efforts, including slash piles that would have otherwise been burned during the winter months. These slash piles, composed of branches, twigs, and other wood debris, represent a significant source of carbon emissions when burned. By intercepting this biomass and burying it instead, Woocache effectively traps the carbon in a solid state, preventing its release into the atmosphere. Ideal Conditions for Carbon Preservation: The site near La Veta is particularly well-suited for preserving carbon within the buried wood. The cold, dry climate of Colorado significantly impedes the activity of organisms that typically break down wood. The reduced temperature and low moisture levels create an inhospitable environment for these decomposers, thereby slowing the decomposition process from years to centuries. Additionally, the clay content in the soil further aids in this process by reducing oxygen levels, which are essential for the organisms that consume wood. This combination of factors ensures that the buried biomass remains stable for extended periods, effectively removing carbon dioxide. Private Land Operations: The wood utilized in this project was harvested from private land, and the burial also took place on private property. The landowners were compensated for both the source material and the burial site, creating a mutually beneficial arrangement. This compensation model not only incentivizes landowners to participate in such carbon removal efforts but also supports local economies. Local Employment and Services: All labor for this project was sourced from local individuals and services, providing employment opportunities and supporting the local community. By engaging local workers and businesses, Woocache ensures that the benefits of the project extend beyond environmental gains, fostering economic growth and resilience within the region. Economically, the project boosts rural employment by creating a supply chain for the removal and burial of high-hazard liability biomass. This not only supports local labor markets but also fosters the development of new skills and industries related to carbon dioxide removal and environmental management. Site Monitoring and Restoration: After the biomass burial operation is completed, the land is returned to its initial use. This ensures that the land can continue to support local activities and ecosystems. To ensure the effectiveness and stability of our carbon sequestration efforts, we are monitoring the site with our second-generation instruments. These instruments are strategically placed within the wood chambers, on the surface above the chambers, and in the air over the chambers. This comprehensive monitoring system allows us to track the condition of the buried biomass and the surrounding environment, ensuring that our carbon removal process is functioning as intended and making adjustments as necessary. Woocache's pilot project near La Veta, Colorado, stands as a testament to the potential of innovative carbon removal methodologies. By leveraging local resources, engaging with private landowners, and creating economic opportunities within the community, Woocache is setting a precedent for sustainable and scalable carbon dioxide removal projects. As the company continues to grow and refine its approach, it holds promise for making substantial contributions to climate change mitigation and wildfire risk reduction, benefiting both the environment and local communities.

Need help

If you need assistance with navigating the Puro.earth supplier listing, the following information can help.

Understanding CORCs (CO2 Removal Certificates)

A CORC is a CO2 Removal Certificate, a first of its kind carbon credit that represent one tonne of verified and removed carbon.

  • CORCs in stock:The issued CORCs available for spot purchase. It does not include CORCs that may be reserved and available for purchase via sales channel partners.
  • Available for reservation:The number of future CORCs available for reservation with advance market commitments based on the facility’s forecasting data.

Facility types:

  • Operational:The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility. CORCs have already been issued and are available on the spot market or the facility will undergo its first audit in the upcoming months.
  • Future Facilities:The facility is in the development phase and is actively seeking commitments from potential buyers to purchase future CORCs.

Certification:

  • Certified:Facility has passed the first third-party audit to verify the net volume of removed carbon which has been issued into CORCs.

How do I buy CORCs?

Navigate the Puro.earth supplier listing using filters such as facility type, region, and durability to find the most suitable facility for your portfolio or purchasing needs.

  • Purchase via sales channel partners:Utilize the sales channel partners highlighted on the facility's listing page. These partners manage the transaction process on your behalf. Find the full list of sales channel partners here.
  • Direct Purchase:Click on the ‘request info from supplier’ button on the facility listing page to get in touch with the supplier directly. If you prefer to buy directly, signing a Platform Agreement with Puro.earth is required. This process involves opening a Puro Registry account, providing you with autonomy over your portfolio management, and control over contracting and timelines.

Contract types:

  • Purchase agreements:Used for spot market transactions for ex-post-issued CORCs
  • Pre-Purchase Agreements:Used for securing CORCs from certified facilities for future CORC issuances
  • Advance Market Commitments:Used for securing future CORCs from future facilities
