Red Trail Energy is a North Dakota bioethanol plant operator who began operations in 2007. The facility utilizes locally sourced corn feedstocks to create bioethanol and additional coproducts. RTE is the first bioethanol plant to receive a permit for a class VI well to capture and store CO2 under North Dakota state primacy. In 2022 RTE’s Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Sequestration (BECCS) project began operation, one of the first in the United States. The facility is capturing the permitted 180,000 ton of annual biogenic CO2 emissions from the facility’s fermentation process. The gaseous CO2 is refrigerated, liquified, and transferred via a short company-controlled pipeline to an onsite class VI well for permanent storage at over 6,000 feet below ground in the Broom Creek formation. RTE owns and operates the Class VI well permitted by the state of North Dakota, where the well monitoring, reporting, and verification is conducted by the state of North Dakota and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. RTE has undergone third party audit for Puro Standard verification of the requirements such as life cycle analysis, financial additionality, environmental and social safeguards and permanence.

In March 2023 we at Exomad Green launched our first biochar facility in Concepción, Bolivia. We expect to scale up our operations significantly during 2024. Together, these facilities will leverage the power of biochar to sequester up to 200,000 tons of CO2 annually. But our vision goes beyond environmental impact. Exomad Green is about creating a better, more sustainable world for everyone. We're striving to improve the quality of life for over 250,000 regional inhabitants, generate green jobs, foster local economic growth, and champion environmental justice across the region. Join us as we embark on this transformative journey, turning residues into wealth and cultivating a more sustainable future. Our process begins at the source with the collection of biomass residues from local sawmills, providing us with an abundant, renewable source of biomass. The biomass is then transported to our state-of-the-art pyrolysis plant, where it undergoes a meticulous sorting and pre-treatment process that includes pre-drying and grinding, using energy-efficient machinery. The biomass is then subjected to pyrolysis at approximately 600 degrees Celsius, during which the carbon in the biomass is trapped, preventing it from being released as carbon dioxide. This results in the production of biochar, a rich carbon product with a unique honeycomb-like structure, ideal for soil enhancement. The biochar we produce improves soil fertility by increasing its capacity to retain water and nutrients, enhancing microbial activity, regulating soil pH, and aiding in soil remediation by absorbing toxins and heavy metals. We then donate our biochar to local indigenous communities, empowering them to enhance their agricultural yields. By doing so, we not only support their livelihoods but also actively contribute to reducing deforestation, ensuring the preservation and sustainable use of our invaluable South American forests. But the benefits of our project do not stop at soil improvement for the local communities. Exomad Green is committed to exceeding environmental standards. We adhere strictly to local and national regulations and have implemented a water treatment plan, enabling us to recycle and reuse water within the plant. We also employ a system for the effective capture and utilization of bio-oil and syngas by-products of the pyrolysis process, further minimizing our environmental footprint. By leveraging the pyrolysis process, we ensure that more than 70% of the heat generated is reused, further boosting our energy efficiency. The syngas produced during pyrolysis is also captured and used as a source of energy within the plant, reducing our reliance on external energy sources. Through our operations, we not only reduce air pollution and fire risks associated with the improper disposal or incineration of biomass residues but also aim to improve air quality for around 250,000 people. We're proud to be contributing to an environmentally friendly solution that simultaneously improves community health. In terms of social impact, we are currently creating green tech jobs for the community, with approximately 50 direct and 200 indirect employments. But we aim to triple this numbers by 2025. Examples of usage info Biochar, a product of pyrolysis, has the ability to sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) because of the nature of its production process and the properties of the resulting material. Here's how the sequestered CO2 in biochar is used or stored: Carbon Capture during Production: During the pyrolysis process, organic matter is heated in an oxygen-limited environment. This prevents the full decomposition of the organic matter into CO2 and other gases. Instead, a significant portion of the carbon in the biomass is retained in a stable form within the biochar. Stable Carbon Structure: Biochar is mostly composed of carbon in a very stable form. This means that it doesn't easily decompose or oxidize to release CO2 back into the atmosphere. As a result, when biochar is applied to soil, the carbon it contains remains sequestered in that stable form for a very long time—potentially hundreds to thousands of years. Soil Application: When biochar is incorporated into the soil, it essentially locks away the carbon it contains. In other words, the carbon in the biochar is removed from the short-term carbon cycle because it won't be quickly returned to the atmosphere as CO2. Enhancement of Soil Carbon Storage: Biochar addition to soils can also indirectly lead to increased soil organic carbon levels by promoting the microbial processes that incorporate CO2 from the atmosphere into soil organic matter. Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions: In addition to its carbon storage capabilities, biochar has been found to reduce the emissions of other greenhouse gases from soil, notably nitrous oxide (N2O). It can do this by influencing soil microbial processes. Displacement of Fossil Fuel Carbon: The pyrolysis process that produces biochar also generates bio-oil and syngas, both of which can be used as energy sources. By utilizing these renewable energy sources instead of fossil fuels, there's a reduction in the net CO2 added to the atmosphere. In essence, the CO2 sequestered in biochar isn't "used" in the way we think of fuel being used. Instead, the carbon is stabilized in a form that resists decomposition, preventing its release as CO2 and thereby serving as a form of carbon storage.

ECOERA is a Swedish biochar innovation company awarded the WWF Climate Solver company label. They have been in the biochar field for over ten years and in 2009 created Sweden’s first large-scale biochar carbon removal in agricultural fields. They were part of developing the Biochar Carbon Offset Methodology and specifically the Biochar Carbon Stability Test Method under the International Biochar Initiative. VGrid's innovative "Bioserver" is a mobile, modular, and scalable machine that converts agricultural and forestry waste into clean, sustainable energy. The ultra-high temperature downdraft gasifier creates a biochar with higher purity (>90%) and porosity (300 m2/g BET) than biochar produced with lower-temperature pyrolysis technologies. Oregon Biochar produces a high-quality, high-carbon and high surface area biochar (Rogue Biochar) from local forestry biomass available in the US's northwest. Our production facility is a carbon-neutral biomass plant located in Jackson County, Oregon. Our feedstocks include low-value biomasses recovered from farms and orchards, woody biomass and burnt material from forest fires as well as secondary and tertiary wood residues from the region. Our biochar has an 83% fixed carbon content, 0.08 H/C and 0.05 O/C molar ratios. It also has a high surface area, which enables it to displace fossil and unsustainably produced activated carbons in applications such as water filtration. About 80% of our production is sold in agriculture where its soil water and nutrient retention and microbial benefits provide farmers with a solution for issues such as low-water availability, drought, nutrient run-off, poor soil and compaction. About 5% of our production is used in stormwater management applications to prevent nutrient and pollutant runoff to water bodies, while the rest is applied in industrial landfills as a capping agent. Sylva Fertilis, a part of the SLB Group, a forestry consortium in France, specializes in the manufacturing of high-quality biochar products for both retail and wholesale markets. They are one of the largest biochar suppliers in France. Their manufacturing facility, located in Argentan in the Normandy region, produces biochar from wood pellets. The wood pellets are sourced from a manufacturer near Reims in the east of France, which produces pellets from timber from sustainably certified forests. The process results in two granularities of char: 0-1 mm and > 1mm. A small portion of the biochar is augmented with mycorrhizal fungi to create soil improvement products under the Terra Fertilis® brand. The remaining biochar is sold as soil improvement products to municipalities, farmers, golf courses, wine producers, and forestry operations. The biochar has an extremely high carbon content of 95%, and each dry ton of biochar contains 3.4 tonnes of CO2. In 2023, Accend carried out a lifecycle assessment (LCA) of Sylva Fertilis' production process, which accounted for all process emissions from the harvesting of forestry materials, chipping and pelletizing, transport, energy use and packaging, and transport of the biochar, and confirms that 2.74 tonnes of CO2 are stored for every 1 ton of biochar. The production of one ton of high-quality biochar results in 3.1 tonnes of harmful carbon dioxide becoming firmly bound for centuries, enabling farmers to make an important contribution to climate and environmental protection. Explocom is a family-owned business that has been producing BBQ charcoal since 1992. The company is now transitioning from BBQ charcoal to biochar for soil amendment and construction materials. In addition, Explocom produces liquid pyrolytic bio-condensate or wood vinegar. The feedstock is FSC certified sawmill waste. The company recently received the EBC certificate for sustainable biochar production. Explocom uses the retort method of pyrolysis. The heat from the syngas combustion is used in the pyrolysis process and for drying incoming feedstock. Excess syngas can be captured and stored for renewable electricity production onsite. During pyrolysis, the biochar reaches a 600°C temperature and after the process is finished it is left for 24 hours to cool down and afterwards it is pulverized. Explocom sells biochar both in powder and in granular form under the brand name Gekka Biochar. They have plans to install additional machinery that will increase the biochar production capacity threefold. The biochar has a carbon content of 78%. A lifecycle assessment (LCA) of Explocom’s production process was carried out by Accend in 2023. The LCA accounts for all process emissions from harvesting of the wood, transport to the production site, and the manufacturing of the biochar on-site and confirms that 2.41 tonnes of CO2 are removed by every 1 ton of biochar. 3rd party verification against the Puro Standard was completed in Q4 2023.

Carbon Hill is a biochar company owned by the Jones family located in Caebardd farm, near Welshpool in mid-Wales, UK. The family, who have been farming for many years, have diversified their operations by leveraging their expertise in biomass and mechanical engineering. Their engineering arm, Woodtek Engineering, designs and manufactures efficient wood chip dryers and feed mechanisms. The company has developed a proprietary pyrolysis thermal combustion system that utilizes new and existing technologies to produce biochar with minimal emissions. The pilot system is operating at Caebardd, but the company plans to roll out dozens of pyrolysis units to process waste biomass in the UK and internationally. Carbon Hill sources two types of waste woody biomass for their biochar production: Tree and hedgerow cuttings and Green Waste Over Size (GWOS) from local parks and gardens. Nordgau Carbon is a farm-based biochar producer located in the village of Wernberg-Köblitz in South-Eastern Germany. Production commenced in April 2020 using untreated wood chips from energy-grade wood from PEFC-certified forestry operations. The production facility lies in the heart of the Bayern forest region, the average transport distance for the feedstock to the facility is only 15km. Nordgau's high-quality biochar contains 87% carbon. Each metric ton of sequesters 2,8 tons of CO2 for centuries. Their biochar enables the responsible farmer to make an essential contribution to climate and environmental protection. Nordgau Carbon produces biochar for mixing with manure or compost for use as a soil improvement medium. The biochar is certified by the EBC (European Biochar Certification) for use as with farm animals and agriculture. Alcom is a Singapore-based renewable energy and carbon project developer. We focus on renewable fuels and are heavily invested in carbon removal technologies, with a focus on developing biochar production facilities. Our team members come with decades of experience in understanding GHG emissions, carbon abatement as well as carbon removal projects. NuevaChar utilizes rice husk as feedstock for biochar production. Alcom has retrofitted a previously mothballed gasifier in the province of Nueva Ecija, Philippines, originally intended to produce heat. The gasifier is linked to four grain drying units managed by the Provincial Government of Nueva Ecija, where the excess heat from gasification is being directed. This project is completely local, from local engineers who worked on retrofits to on the ground production of marketing of biochar, which is intended for local farmers. The biochar from NuevaChar is being distributed to nearby farmers and Alcom has been conducting farm trials to determine the efficacy of biochar to these farmers. Based off the results, Alcom has received a written confirmation that the Provincial Government is satisfied with our farm trial results and is now distributing the biochar to local farmers within the province. Alcom has recorded 18%-20% yield increases in paddy, onion and corn and is working collectively with farmers to improve agricultural practices and increase food security within the province. Along with biochar application, we are also working on rice methane mitigation in paddy fields where we apply biochar, promoting regenerative agricultural practices across paddy farmers in Neuva Ecija. Supporting us not only benefits the environment but also local farmers and helps us achieve our goal of eventually decarbonizing the entire rice industry in the Philippines through sustainable and circular practices.

Hjelmsäter in Sweden uses a BIOMACON technology to produce biochar from forestry residues that is used for soil amendment and environmental improvement in Sweden. The raw material used in the process is a residue from the farm's own forestry and other local actors, all FSC certified forestry. The material used has a content of lignin that makes it suitable for biochar production but less useful for other purposes due to its low energy value. The energy used in the pyrolysis process comes from Hjelmsäter’s own solar panels and the excess heat from the pyrolysis process is used within the business facilities. Hjelmsäters Egendom is situated in Lake Vänern Archipelago and Mount Kinnekulle UNESCO Biosphere Reserve - a model region for sustainable development. The production of biochar could be compared to the reversed effect off burning fossil fuels! Through the process green carbon from the fast carbon cycle is transformed into more stable structure that can be stored for hundreds to thousands of years. Each ton of dry biochar produced at Hjelmsäter contains 94% carbon. The main part of this carbon is sequestered for a long time and kept out form the fast carbon cycle in a way that alternative use of the biomass, such as natural degradation of the biomass or use om the biomass for energy purposes, would fail to do. In the production process of the biochar, including the outtake and transportation of the biomass, 0.1 ton CO2e is emitted while producing 1 ton of biochar. The emissions from the production process are exceptionally low, and the pyrolysis process only represent 5% of all emissions. With respect to the low emissions from the production, and a buffer to cover the degraded carbon in the biochar, each ton of dry biochar corresponds to 3.26 ton of CO2e removed from circulation. The biochar produced at Hjelmsäter is distributed to many different locations. All biochar is used in applications where the biochar properties, such as its capacity to buffer nutrients and water, is of main interest. To elaborate, biochar is used in applications where it increases the environmental value through its properties. These include improved growth and fertility, but also decreased overfertilization in the surrounding area and decreased the runoff from the managed systems. Applications where the biochar could be used as a fuel or be exposed to enhanced oxidation is not allowed. Examples of usage include improving green urban areas, soil amendment, agricultural applications, and urban use for improved water management. In the applications, the biochar contributes to further mitigations and adaptation for the climate, this is however not accounted for and included in the calculations of the CORCs.

Carbofex offers a premium grade of biochar for the horticulture industry and water filtering applications. Our biochar captures and stores more CO2 than is emitted in the manufacturing. One tonne of Carbofex biochar removes 3,2 tonnes of CO2 eq. from the atmosphere into long-term storage in the product. The feedstock is spruce thinnings of sustainably managed Finnish PEFC-certified forests, that would otherwise decompose or be burnt. Carbofex is the first Puro.earth-certified biochar producer in the world and participated in Puro's Biochar methodology working group when it was first launched in 2019. How it works Biochar is produced from biomass or biowaste, through pyrolysis (heating in high temperatures in the absence of oxygen). Pyrolysis creates a very stable, solid form of carbon that can endure in soil for thousands of years, making it an ideal technology for scalable carbon removal. Carbofex biochar is manufactured from spruce thinnings of sustainably managed Finnish PEFC-certified forests. The raw material would thus decay, as CO2 to the atmosphere, without the project. After the state-of-the-art process a kilo (kg) of the resulting biochar embodies 3,4 kg of CO2 and has caused 0,24 kg of fossil CO2 emissions from cradle-to-grave i.e. from harvesting the wood to the end-customer use phase. The resulting biochar has high fixed carbon content (94,8%) and chemical and structural stability far greater than in the original materials and removes 3,2 tonnes of CO2 eq. from the atmosphere. It has multiple commercial uses at potentially industrial volumes, for example, as greenhouse additive, in soil regeneration and in wastewater treatment. The biochar production is verified for carbon negativity by DNV GL, and issued CORCs per each tonne of CO2 removed from the atmosphere. Life-Cycle Assessment made by Ecobio followed the methodology described in ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards where applicable.

ECHO2 transforms residues from plantation forestry, agriculture, food and wood processing, that would otherwise end up as green-house gas emissions by being burned or landfilled, into bioenergy and biochar. Each tonne of biochar is over 80% pure carbon and removes 2.5 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of product, for centuries. The biochar is used for horticulture and agriculture. ECHO2 is the first Puro.earth-certified biochar producer outside Europe. Common practice in many regions of the world is to burn or landfill large quantities of agricultural and woody residues. We estimate that over 20 million tonnes of accessible crop and woody residues are intentionally burned or landfilled every year in Australia, and only a small percentage is up-cycled in any way. ECHO2 was developed as a circular economy up-cycling system that utilises low value organic residues such as city green wastes, plantation forestry residues, wood wastes from construction and crop residues, such as cereal straws. Biochar sequesters large amounts of CO2 in a useful way. It improves the performance of many products including fertilisers, animal feeds and building and construction materials. The first commercial system is a single ECHO2 module that converts recycled wood, that would otherwise be burned or landfilled, into biochar for the composted products producer Van Schaik's BioGro and into glasshouse heating for South Australian herb grower Holla-Fresh. The second commercial system now under construction is six ECHO2 modules to convert local cereal straw and other residues that would otherwise be burned or landfilled, into biochar for sale to local farmers and into glasshouse heating for Victorian tomato and capsicum grower Katunga Fresh. A growing pipeline of ECHO2 projects now exist that will utilise crop and plantation residues to replace LPG and natural gas for heating and to supply biochar to local farms. ECHO2 enables economic, environmental and social benefits by converting these low value organic carbon residues into renewable heat and electricity and sequestering over 60% of the carbon in the residues into stable biochar. This system creates local jobs, sustainable air, soil and water eco systems while developing new circular economies and markets in the process. CORC revenue enables ECHO2 biochar to be offered to pioneer farmers and composters at a subsidised price - effectively rewarding them for their climate services while building this and other biochar markets to enable larger scale carbon removal. The revenue acquired by carbon removal suppliers propels their growth, compounding the climate effect and accelerating the carbon net-negative economy. Each current generation ECHO2 module operating 24x7 has the capacity to remove ~5,000 tonnes of CO2-e per year. Income from Puro CORCs allows the ECHO2 biochar to be sold to pioneer farmers and composters at a price that rewards them for the climate service they provide as part of this circular economy. This grows the market for biochar which underpins additional ECHO2 modules and additional carbon removal. 1 tonne of ECHO2 biochar removes 2.5 tonnes of CO2 eq. from the atmosphere into long-term storage in the product.
