About the project

Jord is an innovative Swedish company that will establish and operate this project in Senegal; developing a modern biochar production facility that will produce circa 10,700 metric tons of biochar and an estimated 22,600 CORCs at full production.

Jord's source of biomass to produce biochar is Jord's own C4-grass that is cultivated and managed through a regenerative farming model, located side by side with the biochar production facility. Jord’s farming of C4-grass only takes place on marginal land (lands that are very close to being dessertified and not suitable to hold other crops) and is operated with a regenerative farming model. In Senegal, the degradation of ecosystems is becoming more and more alarming. This phenomenon is exacerbated by monoculture, which makes much of the land vulnerable. Jord cultivates the biomass in areas that are considerably marginal and Jord includes all best practices in regenerative farming.

Jord recognizes that local community involvement is necessary to launch and sustain a new mechanism for regenerative farming and carbon capture, so local communities have been integral to the planning and development of various initiatives.

Our biochar production facility is located adjacent to the farm, making transportation of biomass and biochar easy to manage.

Jord distinguishes itself from other businesses through its unique operational model, which comprises three key components:
(I) Exclusively operating on marginal land: Jord's activities are confined solely to land that has been rendered marginal due to prior human intervention or natural desertification,
(II) Implementation of regenerative farming practices: Jord has developed a proprietary regenerative farming model that facilitates soil restoration and provides various co-benefits such as biodiversity improvement, and
(III) Employment of natural method carbon removal: Jord's approach to carbon removal involves the utilization of biochar, which is produced and buried in the soil, contributing to amending the soil. Additionally, Jord's validated methodology also sequesters carbon in the substantial root systems of the C4 grass, leading to additional carbon dioxide removal.

Jord ardently believes in our potential to effect substantial and sustainable positive impact in the world. As an organization, we are keenly committed to healing the planet's carbon cycle and reducing the environmental impact of humankind.

Purchasing pre-CORCs from Jord will not only contribute to the financing of Jord’s carbon removal capacity and support the company's mission to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but Jord's operations also encompass a range of co-benefits that arise directly from the company's activities. Additionally, Jord's extraordinary ambitions to become a comprehensive force for good also result in a variety of co-benefits.

Here are some of the many co-benefits that are included when you purchase pre-CORCs from Jord:

    Co-benefits from Jord’s operations:
Jord is active in developing regions
Since Jord is active in developing regions in the world, the Company’s positive impact is seen where its needed the most.

    Biodiversity improvements
Jord’s regenerative farming model creates a diverse and thriving ecosystem that supports a range of plant and animal species. Overall, the regenerative farming approach leads to a more resilient and sustainable ecosystem that benefits both the land and the surrounding environment.

    Thriving communities
Jord creates job opportunities in rural areas with low employment and education, giving fair and equal opportunities for men and women.

    Potential to produce food
As a part of Jord’s agronomic plan is food production. After restoring marginal land, the soil is fertile and can hold food crops and other commercial crops.

    Future sustainable biofuels
Biofuel can be used in power production to replace fossil fuels and in off-grid areas. It can also allow millions of people to stop using charcoal that comes from wood.

    Restoring marginal land
Availability of farmable land is scarce in the area, but Jord’s regenerative farming model and the C4-grasses deep root system move carbon into the soils, combined with application our own biochar increases carbon storage and soil activity, reduce fertilizer use and nitrogen runoffs to restore the marginal land.

    Slowing deforestation
By regenerating soils and bringing back marginal and degraded land to food production, we reduce pressure on forests to provide farmland or grazing land.

    Increased economic output
New production pathways, incorporation of best practices and direct job creation will create a new and long-term income structure for local communities.

  • Certifications or assessments info
    Jord's certifications and assessments:
    • Jord has conducted a "Pre Carbon Footprint Study" with VästLCA, to be admitted to Puro.earth's platform.
    • Jord has a carbon removal methodology that is separately validated by DNV.
    • Jord is currently conducting a full Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) with belonging documentation such as Environmental Social Management System and Environmental and Social Action plan. When finished, these will be integrated into Jord's already substantial management system.
  • Project start date info
    01/10/2023

  • Annual carbon removal capacity in tCO2e (number) info
    23000
  • Additionality info

The facility is under planning and Jord already has some available land in the area.

The business plan assumes that the sales of the physical biochar will be able to cover all the costs of the operations and create profit. Jord hopes to sell biochar removal credits to partly secure funding for the project establishment in terms of investment CAPEX and in order to initiate the project with an accelerated timeline. The sales and revenue from biochar carbon credits will also help Jord scale operations quicker and extend the positive impact of the organization.

The current conditionalities to the project are:

    • Jord assumes that the title to the land is ready in Q3 2023
    • Financing is assumed to be ready in Q3 2023
