Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Blackwell’s Corner

The Wonderful Company is the world’s largest grower of tree nuts and America’s largest citrus grower. Wonderful Renewable Solutions (WRS) works across Wonderful’s portfolio of business operations to identify, incubate, and scale sustainable ventures.
Our 2025 Blackwell’s Corner Project will securely store carbon in the form of wood for at least 100 years by burying it under dry conditions to prevent decomposition. The project will be sited in California on Wonderful-owned land using wood from Wonderful-owned orchards, and will deliver 20,000 tons of high-quality carbon removals.

How it works:

Orchard trees from Wonderful’s farming operations are chipped at end of their agronomic lifecycle. Those dry chips are then transported to the adjacent burial site and deposited into engineered excavated chambers that are designed to prevent water from entering, therefore inhibiting decomposition. Extensive monitoring equipment is installed in each chamber for long-term supervision. Once the chambers are sealed, native vegetation is planted on top to increase biodiversity and further protect the wood from water infiltration.
The Blackwell’s Corner project is the first terrestrial storage of biomass (TSB) project to pass Puro’s Preliminary Assessment. The preliminary assessment report will be posted on this page shortly.

Why Wonderful?

Wonderful is uniquely positioned to deliver biomass burial carbon removal in California’s Central Valley. Wonderful has operated in the Central Valley for four decades, with over 5,000 fulltime employees across 30 different locations. Our vertically integrated businesses provides access to an unparalleled asset base and broad network of in-house expertise. The design and instrumentation plan for this project have been developed in close collaboration with academic experts from Caltech, Stanford, University of Virginia, and North Carolina State University.

In addition to high-quality carbon removal, the Blackwell’s Corner project provides cobenefits that support the surrounding natural environment and community:

Biodiversity: By planting native vegetation on top of the chambers, this project will promote biodiversity and create new habitat for local species.

Supporting circular economy: Our TSB project uses wood residuals from agriculture, turning this material into a valuable resource for carbon sequestration. The projects encourage the responsible reuse of biomass, promoting a high value end use for wood.

Developing carbon market workforce in Central Valley: Establishing and maintaining wood burial projects creates employment opportunities in engineering, construction, and project monitoring. The project supports the development of skillsets necessary for a green economy in a region of California historically tied to the oil and gas industry.
