Certification journey
We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.
The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.
The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.
Development status
We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.
The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.
The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.
The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.
The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Alcom-01-NuevaEcijaPhilippines
Alcom is a Singapore-based renewable energy and carbon project developer. We focus on renewable fuels and are heavily invested in carbon removal technologies, with a focus on developing biochar production facilities. Our team members come with decades of experience in understanding GHG emissions, carbon abatement as well as carbon removal projects.
NuevaChar utilizes rice husk as feedstock for biochar production. Alcom has retrofitted a previously mothballed gasifier in the province of Nueva Ecija, Philippines, originally intended to produce heat. The gasifier is linked to four grain drying units managed by the Provincial Government of Nueva Ecija, where the excess heat from gasification is being directed. This project is completely local, from local engineers who worked on retrofits to on the ground production of marketing of biochar, which is intended for local farmers.
The biochar from NuevaChar is being distributed to nearby farmers and Alcom has been conducting farm trials to determine the efficacy of biochar to these farmers. Based off the results, Alcom has received a written confirmation that the Provincial Government is satisfied with our farm trial results and is now distributing the biochar to local farmers within the province. Alcom has recorded 18%-20% yield increases in paddy, onion and corn and is working collectively with farmers to improve agricultural practices and increase food security within the province.
Along with biochar application, we are also working on rice methane mitigation in paddy fields where we apply biochar, promoting regenerative agricultural practices across paddy farmers in Neuva Ecija. Supporting us not only benefits the environment but also local farmers and helps us achieve our goal of eventually decarbonizing the entire rice industry in the Philippines through sustainable and circular practices.
Co-benefits from this project are linked to the SDGs from this project:
1 (No Poverty) & 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) - as our on the ground production staff is fully local and includes members of indigenous tribes – locally referred to as the sons of the soil. Our project provides employment to local Filipino laborers, in rural areas where there are limited economic opportunities.
3 (Good Health and Well Being) - as the biochar gasification process emits significantly less CO2 and black carbon as opposed to open air furnaces, which are currently commonplace in rural areas in the Philippines.
11 (Sustainable Development) - as we are making the communities in Palayan City more closed loop by encouraging re-utilizing of rice husk in an eco-friendly manner that also sequesters carbon without polluting the environment
13 (Climate Action) – as biochar buried in the soil sequesters carbon.
15 (Life on Land) – as biochar enhances the nutritional value of the soil and reduces fertilizer runoff. From our farm trials, we have noted that it also increases the robustness of soil to droughts by increasing the soil’s water retention capacity.
