Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

Turning an ecosystem crisis into durable carbon removal.

Dragonfly is Tivano’s first operational carbon removal project in Namibia and the largest biomass storage site in Africa. Located near Otjiwarongo, it is built on a simple idea: carbon removal should not only store carbon for the long term, but also help restore ecosystem balance.

The land around Otjiwarongo is part of Namibia’s savanna rangelands, a landscape of open grasslands, wildlife, seasonal water flows and rural livelihoods. But across large areas, this savanna has been disrupted by bush encroachment. Dense woody vegetation has spread over land that was once more open, reducing grass cover, limiting grazing capacity, blocking wildlife movement and placing extra pressure on scarce groundwater. In many places, the landscape has become trapped in ecological imbalance.

Dragonfly starts by working with the land, not against it. Tivano selectively removes unwanted encroacher bush from degraded areas where this intervention can support the return of healthier savanna conditions. This is not broad land clearing. It is careful ecosystem repair: creating space for grasses to recover, for wildlife to move more freely, for water systems to function better and for landholders to regain productive rangeland.

The removed encroacher bush then becomes the starting point for durable carbon removal.

As plants grow, they absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere and store carbon in their biomass. Normally, harvested biomass would eventually decompose, burn or be used in ways that quickly release much of that carbon back into the air. With Dragonfly, Tivano air-dries, compacts and stores the biomass in an engineered underground carbon vault. The vault is designed to keep the material dry, and sealed, slowing biological breakdown and enabling long-term carbon storage.

The Dragonfly carbon vault combines practical engineering with ecological purpose. It uses geotechnical design principles and ongoing monitoring to track vault conditions over time. This allows Tivano to deliver high-quality carbon removal while supporting the recovery of the surrounding landscape.

Dragonfly is verified under the Puro.earth Terrestrial Storage of Biomass methodology to generate CO₂ Removal Certificates (CORCs). The project is designed to meet strict requirements for additionality, durability and traceability.

The first Dragonfly project restored approximately 120 hectares of degraded savanna landscape, roughly the size of 190 football fields. It is Tivano’s first proof point for a modular carbon vault system that can be replicated across suitable bush-encroached landscapes in Namibia and the wider region.

Dragonfly shows what Tivano stands for: carbon removal that is deeply connected to place. By turning unwanted encroacher bush into durable carbon storage, the project helps restore savanna function, supports rural landholders and creates a model where climate infrastructure and living ecosystems strengthen one another.

Dragonfly restores more than carbon.

Tivano’s Dragonfly project is built around three linked co-benefits: savanna habitat restoration, ecosystem resilience, and local economic value. By selectively reducing excessive woody vegetation, Dragonfly helps restore ecological balance in bush-encroached savanna landscapes.

This supports the recovery of open savanna structure, improving habitat quality, wildlife movement, and vegetation diversity. It also helps ease water stress by reducing competition from dense encroacher bush, supporting grassland recovery in a semi-arid landscape.

Dragonfly also creates value for local landholders by supporting selective bush harvesting. This provides a revenue stream linked to rangeland rehabilitation and strengthens local capacity to restore degraded savanna ecosystems.

Together, these co-benefits make Dragonfly more than a carbon storage project. It shows how engineered carbon removal can restore ecosystems, improve resilience, and create rural value where the biomass is sourced.
