Karbonetiq Contrecoeur

Karbonetiq was founded in 2022 to develop technology, processes, and projects to mineralize alkaline industrial wastes for durable, hi-quality CDR. Karbonetiq’s leadership has aggregated decades of experience in the waste-to-value industry and more than 10 years in high-durability carbon removal. Our approach inherently minimizes new environmental and social disruption, while advancing environmental justice, building climate resilience, and developing alternative livelihoods for communities impacted by, and reliant on, industrial activity. Our aim is to develop a replicable project type to establish CDR as a pillar of industrial decarbonization globally.

Karbonetiq is the project proponent for Contrecoeur CDR, currently under development in Quebec, near Montreal. We are partnered with Harsco Environmental as our operational partner and site owner. This project is active and will issue initial credits in late 2025.

Contrecoeur uses waste steel slag to directly sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through a naturally occurring chemical reaction. The slag is crushed, screened and positioned on proprietary passive air transport devices to rapidly carbonate freshly exposed contact surfaces.

MRV is primarily comprised of sampling and lab-based chemical analysis, using a variety of orthogonal methods to precisely quantify credits. We also implement site-based measurement of gaseous CO2 to corroborate the project's impact.

Karbonetiq has identified 3 Social Development Goals to which our work demonstrably contributes. These include Goal 9: Industry, innovation, and infrastructure, Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production, and Goal 13 Climate action. Across these goals, we have identified and qualified 7 Indicators of contribution in supplemental documentation. In addition to contributing to positive climate action alongside all CDR, the location of Karbonetiq projects within existing industrial supply chains holds the potential for positive transformation. None of these SDG’s currently fall within Puro.Earth’s current evaluation scope and will therefore not be submitted for verification.

Contrecoeur CDR will additionally contribute financially to the local economy, including revenue sharing agreements we have with local partners, and extensive local hiring.
