Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Oasis Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage

About Boomitra:

Boomitra is the leading developer of soil carbon projects with a portfolio that includes eight major projects and spans 10 countries, four continents and five million acres. Our projects promote regenerative practices in croplands and rangelands, provide access to carbon finance for tens of thousands of smallholder producers, and deliver a range of co-benefits.

Project Overview:

Building on our soil carbon success, Boomitra has entered the terrestrial storage of biomass (TSB) space with a large-scale project in Botswana, which both durably stores carbon and contributes to regeneration of the regional savanna ecosystem. The project utilizes biomass from the selective and sustainable harvesting of encroacher bush consisting of specific woody species that have negatively transformed the ecosystem. After harvesting, the biomass is dried, processed and buried to create conditions that promote long-term stability and minimize re-emissions. Specialized equipment is used for harvesting, processing, and storage—all of which takes place on-site to minimize project emissions.

Facility and Partners:

Our Oasis Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage project combines terrestrial storage of biomass best practices with novel approaches and is part of a broader effort to regenerate the natural savanna ecosystem by mitigating bush encroachment. The project area is owned by a single entity who also is our operational partner, so the project is streamlined in several key ways. In addition, Boomitra is partnering with a local rangeland specialist and other stakeholders such as wildlife conservation groups who have a keen interest in restoring habitats and improving biodiversity.

1) Sustainable thinning of encroacher bush promotes the regeneration of the savanna ecosystem and regrowth of vegetation such as native grasses.

2) Regeneration of the savanna ecosystem will contribute to erosion control, soil health and water conservation, and improve the overall land productivity, which contributes to increased food security and enhances community resilience.

3) The project will create several dozen jobs, including equipment operators, laborers and administrators, and represents an opportunity for community members to learn new skills and shape a new industry in the region.
