Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Pure Biochar

A Healthier Earth is a climate-tech catalyst committed to finding the solutions that tackle the most urgent regional and global sustainability challenges.

With our technology agnostic approach, we bring together the idea, technology and investment to develop, deliver and operate climate solutions at scale. We develop investable business plans, secure finance and deliver and operate planet-positive infrastructure that restores the world we live in and enables its people and societies to thrive.

Our project located in Swindon, UK will be one of the largest biochar facilities in the country, producing up to 10k tonnes of biochar annually at scale.

Built and operating alongside a waste management and recycling company, the operation will utilise an end-of-life waste stream (urban green waste) that has no onward use case and is currently sent to landfill. We will produce high-quality, EBC certified, biochar for use in agricultural, construction and urban environment applications.

Our project is using PYREG’s class-leading PX1500 pyrolysis technology and we are partnering with a leading MRV provider to ensure robust project accountability alongside high-quality biochar.

Our facility will create employment opportunities in roles across maintenance, operations and management as well as indirect roles within the A Healthier Earth organisation for the management of biochar and carbon credit management and sales.

Our process will also create excess energy, above and beyond what is required for the pyrolysis machine to operate. This energy will be generated from a waste biomass, providing additional sustainably sourced energy into the grid.

We have spent a lot of time and effort on the pre-processing side of our operation, taking what is a difficult to use feedstock source with no onward use case currently. Our demonstration of how difficult feedstocks can still be used and deliver a viable business will drive others to try to use genuine waste streams that are currently discounted due to their difficulty being converted into usable biomass.

We are focusing on a wide range of biochar use cases from agriculture, construction materials and biophilic design. Our initial trials have demonstrated a dramatic reduction in water use in our biophilic design applications when biochar is included.
