Certification journey
We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.
The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.
The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.
Development status
We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.
The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.
The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.
The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.
The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Carbonsate Project Namibia
Carbonsate’s Namibia project implements large-scale Biomass Storage Carbon Removal through the durable storage of encroaching bush biomass in arid savanna regions. Bush encroachment is a widespread ecological and economic challenge in Namibia: native woody species have expanded aggressively over past decades, reducing biodiversity, suppressing grass growth, lowering groundwater recharge, and limiting the productivity of rangelands.
Our project addresses this challenge by selectively harvesting excess encroaching bush and storing the biomass in engineered dry storage systems on degraded land areas that are not suitable for agricultural use. The biomass is placed in specially designed storage pits and covered to ensure long-term oxygen limitation and protection from moisture ingress. Namibia’s semi-arid climate, low precipitation, and high evaporation rates provide ideal ambient conditions for dry biomass storage. By combining natural climatic advantages with engineered design, we create stable storage conditions that significantly reduce biological decomposition and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
The carbon removed from the atmosphere during the growth of the bush remains locked away for a minimum durability period of 100 years. Our storage sites are carefully selected and prepared to ensure long-term stability, protection from erosion, and clear land tenure arrangements.
A core component of our approach is robust Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV). Carbonsate has developed a proprietary sensor-based monitoring system specifically for biomass storage applications. In addition, we conduct on-site flux chamber measurements to quantify surface gas emissions and validate storage performance. This combination of embedded sensing and direct flux measurements provides high-resolution insight into storage conditions and ensures transparency and environmental integrity.
The project is implemented in close collaboration with local landowners, farmers, and service providers. Biomass harvesting is carried out using established bush control practices adapted to meet carbon removal requirements. By integrating into existing land management activities, the project ensures operational feasibility while maintaining ecological safeguards.
Over time, the project aims to scale across suitable regions of Namibia with abundant encroaching bush and appropriate dry climatic conditions. Namibia offers significant potential for responsible, large-scale biomass storage due to the combination of bush biomass availability, land suitability, and climatic stability.
Through this approach, Carbonsate permanently removes atmospheric CO₂, stores biogenic carbon in controlled dry conditions, and contributes to the development of a high-integrity carbon removal pathway. The Namibia project demonstrates that nature-based carbon capture combined with engineered durability and advanced monitoring can provide scalable, transparent, and long-term carbon removal.
Beyond durable carbon removal, the Namibia project generates substantial environmental and socio-economic co-benefits.
Selective removal of encroaching bush supports the restoration of the savanna ecosystem by reducing woody overgrowth, enabling grassland regeneration, improving biodiversity, and enhancing water infiltration. Healthier rangelands increase resilience to drought and support sustainable livestock management.
The project also contributes to the development of a local biomass economy. Harvesting, transport, site preparation, monitoring, and long-term site management create local employment opportunities and stable income streams in rural areas. By working with local landowners and service providers, the project strengthens regional value chains and builds technical capacity in carbon removal and environmental monitoring.
Together, these co-benefits align climate mitigation with ecosystem restoration and rural economic development in Namibia.
