Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Energnist CaptureCo

Energnist CaptureCo A/S is owned by Energnist Esbjerg A/S—Western Denmark’s largest waste-to-energy company with strong municipal backing from 16 municipalities. The project will capture CO₂ from flue gas at the Energnist Esbjerg waste-to-energy plant, located less than 3 km from the new CO₂ terminal at Port of Esbjerg, ensuring a short and efficient value chain.

Start of Operations: End of 2029, with first CORCs delivered in 2030.
Annual Capture: Over 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ captured and permanently stored offshore.
Forecast: Approx. 85,000 CORCs annually.

Certification: CORCs issued by Puro.earth, documenting permanent and durable removal.
Prime Location Advantage: No road or rail transport required; CO₂ is piped to the port, liquefied, and shipped offshore—minimizing cost and footprint.
Technology: Proven amine-based capture technology, supported by two FEED studies and Tier 1 EPC contractors.

1) Climate Impact & National Goals:
Contributes significantly to Denmark’s 70% CO₂ reduction target by 2030 and accelerates deployment of CCS infrastructure.

2) Circular Waste Management:
Utilizes municipal waste streams for energy recovery while capturing emissions that would otherwise be released—creating a closed-loop system.

3) Local Economic Development:
Strengthens Esbjerg’s role as a CCS hub, creating jobs in engineering, logistics, and operations, and leveraging local oil & gas expertise for green transition.

4) Infrastructure Synergy:
Co-locating capture and port facilities reduces complexity, costs, and emissions from transport—setting a benchmark for efficient CCS projects.

5) Regulatory & Environmental Assurance:
Permanent offshore storage in one of Europe’s most mature geological sites, monitored under Danish and EU regulations for safety and durability.

6) Scalable Model for Future Projects
Demonstrates a replicable pathway for waste-to-energy plants to integrate CCS, supporting broader decarbonization of municipal waste systems.
