Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Renergi Pyrolysis Plant in Collie

Renergi Pty Ltd is pioneering negative-emission bioenergy solutions to drive a bio-based circular economy. Our proprietary grinding pyrolysis and indirect drying technologies enable the efficient conversion of diverse biomass and municipal wastes into biochar, bio-oil, and wood vinegar, maximising resource utilisation while permanently sequestering carbon.

In this project, Renergi has built its first commercial-scale pyrolysis plant in Collie, Western Australia, showcasing some of our patented technologies.
The plant transforms a variety of wastes into valuable products:

Biochar – Used for enhancing soil health in agriculture, a carbon-negative construction material, treatment and/or filtration of wastewater, input into our patented biocarbon technologies.

Bio-oil – Functions as a renewable fuel or chemical alternative, with future potential for drop-in biofuels and biocarbon materials.

Wood vinegar – A natural, sustainable bio-stimulant / fertiliser.

The generation and sale of biochar-derived carbon credits from this project will facilitate the large-scale deployment of Renergi’s cutting-edge pyrolysis technology across Australia and globally, accelerating carbon removal efforts.

In summary, this initiative demonstrates the world’s most advanced biomass and waste conversion technology, offering a scalable and impactful solution for global carbon sequestration.

A very wide range of co-benefits have been identified from the operation of the facility, including the mass replication of the same facility design in Australia and globally using our novel technologies. Key examples are given below.

A. Feedstock

By using waste biomass as a feedstock, the facility will have the following co-benefits:
• The waste biomass from sustainable forestry operation or planation is a significant fire hazard, which will be eliminated by processing the waste biomass in this facility.
• The waste biomass can also rot on the ground, causing the emission of greenhouse gases (e.g. CH4) and air pollutants. These emissions will be eliminated by processing the waste biomass in this facility.
• The preparation and delivery of waste biomass creates skilled jobs in regional Australia, contributing to local economy and regional development.
• By creating a financial income stream from the utilisation in this facility of waste biomass from the sustainable forestry management (e.g. thinning), this facility will provide an economically feasible way for sustainable forestry management. Maintaining a healthy forest is obviously beneficial for environment and economy.

By using municipal organic/solid wastes as feedstock, the facility will:
• help to eliminate landfilling, which is still the main practical means of waste management for the area where the facility will be operated and many other areas in Australia and globally. The negative impacts of landfills are notoriously well-known, emitting large amounts of greenhouse gases (especially CH4) and other pollutants, contaminating ground/underground water and wasting valuable land.
• turn an emission-intensive landfill into a carbon sink.

B. Products

- Biochar: in addition to carbon sequestration, biochar (from biomass) will be an excellent soil conditioner for sustainable agriculture. This is especially important for the sandy soil in Australia that badly lacks organic carbon.

- Biochar can also be used as part of animal feedstuff, improving animal health and productivity.

- Biochar, including that from municipal wastes, will be used in the built environment, for landscaping or as a concrete/bitumen additive for better and lower emission road and building construction.

- Bio-oil will be used as a liquid fuel in industry for industrial heat or as an industrial reductant to replace fossil fuel, especially coal and natural gas.

-Some heavy bio-oil will be used as a chemical partially reducing petroleum-derived products.

- Wood vinegar will be used as a fertiliser, a growth stimulant or a pesticide/herbicide (subject to approval by Australian governmental authority for use as a pesticide/herbicide). This will reduce the use of fossil-fuel-derived fertilisers and other chemicals.

Biochar plus wood vinegar are ideal ingredients for organic farming.
