Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Avonmouth Production Facility

Avonmouth Carbon Mineralization.
Converting CO₂ emissions into solid building materials through accelerated carbonation.
The Avonmouth project operated by O.C.O Technology Limited is a key component of their innovative approach to carbon capture and utilization. Located at Unit 1 Severn View Industrial Estate, Central Avenue, Avonmouth, UK BS10 7SD, this facility is at the forefront of converting CO₂ emissions into solid building materials. Through the process of accelerated carbonation, CO₂ is reacted with alkali earth hydroxides and silicates to produce carbonated aggregate from waste materials. This unique method not only helps in reducing carbon emissions but also provides a sustainable solution for carbon removal.

In terms of production, the Avonmouth facility blends different thermal residues, conditions them with water, and exposes them to an elevated concentration of carbon dioxide to accelerate the carbonation process. This results in the production of carbonated aggregate with a carbon content of 144 kg of CO₂ per tonne of aggregate product. The facility has demonstrated a significant output, with 401,773 tonnes of aggregate product produced in the full calendar year prior to registration. These numbers underscore the scale and impact of the Avonmouth project in contributing to carbon removal efforts.

Compliance and verification are integral aspects of the Avonmouth project, ensuring that the facility meets the required standards and regulations. Through compliance assessments, necessary permits, and verification activities in line with the Puro Standard General Rules and Carbonated Building Material Methodology, the Avonmouth site upholds its commitment to environmental responsibility. Looking ahead, the Avonmouth project is part of O.C.O Technology Limited's expansion strategy, with plans for a fourth site in Wretham set to begin operations in early 2024. Additionally, international plants in Australia, Japan, and Spain are on the horizon, showcasing the company's global vision for sustainable carbon removal practices.

Utilising waste materials in the formation of the limestone aggregate reduces the volume of waste consigned to landfill, and thereby avoids the adverse environmental impacts associated with landfill operations.

Creating an artificial limestone reduces the need for the quarrying of virgin materials, thereby reducing the environmental impacts from quarry operations.

O.C.O utilises biogenic waste CO2, produced from the anaerobic digestion of energy crops. This CO2 would otherwise be released to atmosphere.
