Celebrating a Milestone: 1 Million Tonnes of CO2 Removed Together
In a significant step forward for the carbon removal market, Puro.earth has announced the issuance of over one million tonnes of CO₂ Removal Certificates (CORCs), marking a major milestone in the fight against climate change. This milestone is not just a testament to our growth—it reflects the collective effort of an entire ecosystem dedicated to scaling high-quality carbon removal solutions.
A Journey of Collaboration
Since its first issuance in 2019, Puro.earth has issued over 1 million CORCs, with the number of certificates doubling from 500,000 to 1 million in just one year. This achievement is the direct result of the dedication and hard work of our suppliers, partners, and buyers—visionaries who are paving the way for a net-negative future. We are deeply grateful to each and every one of you for making this possible. Together, we are proving that carbon removal at scale is not just an aspiration but a reality.
Looking ahead, we expect to reach this milestone again by mid-2026. The increasing demand for high-integrity carbon removal solutions and the commitment of pioneering entrepreneurs, investors, and corporate buyers are driving this rapid expansion, reinforcing the role of engineered carbon removals in decarbonization strategies worldwide.
Jan-Willem Bode, President of Puro.earth, emphasized the significance of this achievement: "Reaching one million tonnes of CO₂ removals is just the beginning. Our goal is to continue delivering proven, scalable, and high-quality carbon removal credits. The next million is already within reach, and we will ensure that businesses worldwide have access to trusted, verifiable carbon removal credits at scale."

We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Puro.earth to scale impact even further."
Putting One Million Tonnes into Perspective
To understand the impact of removing one million tonnes of CO₂, consider that this amount is equivalent to the annual emissions of approximately 217,480 passenger cars. While this may seem like a small fraction of the global emissions, it represents a crucial step in the broader effort to meet the Paris Agreement goals. By 2050, the world will need to remove 7-9 billion tonnes of CO₂ annually to limit global warming to 1.5°C. This milestone demonstrates that engineered carbon removals are not just viable but essential to this effort.
Scaling Global Carbon Removal
Of the first one million issuances, over half (52.13%) have been retired, meaning 576,561 metric tonnes of CO₂ have been claimed for. The methodologies driving this milestone include Geologically Stored Carbon (GSC), such as Direct Air Capture Carbon and Storage (DACCS) and Bio Energy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), and Biochar, both of which are popular for their scalability and measurable outcomes.
Carbon removal is truly a global effort. The United States leads in issuances, contributing nearly half of the total, followed by Finland, Bolivia, and Brazil. Other key European markets include Austria, Norway, and the United Kingdom. This global reach highlights the growing momentum in engineered carbon removals driven by Puro.earth and its partners.
Looking Forward Together
The current momentum in the carbon removal market clearly reflects sentiment amongst buyers that engineered carbon removal is a crucial for combatting climate change. Top corporate buyers like Microsoft, Google, and Frontier Buyers have been instrumental in paving the way and enabling carbon removal suppliers to scale. We are excited to see more businesses—especially from hard-to-abate sectors like aviation, concrete, steel manufacturing, shipping, and chemical production— recognizing the necessity of including durable carbon removal in their climate strategies.
This milestone is just one step in a much larger journey. The road ahead is ambitious, but we have no doubt that, together, we will continue to scale carbon removal solutions and drive meaningful climate impact.
From all of us at Puro.earth— thank you. Your commitment, vision, and collaboration are making a real difference, and we look forward to reaching many more milestones with you.
