Certification journey
We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.
The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.
The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.
Development status
We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.
The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.
The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.
The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.
The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Aeon Blue Cape Breton Project
From Sea to Sky: The Future of Direct Air Capture
Aeon Blue’s groundbreaking Direct Air Capture (DAC) solution produces drop-in sustainable fuels (eFuels) while geologically storing significant amounts of carbon.
By integrating DAC with permanent geologic storage, Aeon Blue's first industrial facility will demonstrate a complete carbon removal system that also displaces fossil fuels, setting a new standard for Direct Air Capture and eFuel technology that actively combats climate change.
1. Optimal Coastal Setting: Project Location
The project site has been strategically selected to maximize operational efficiency and geological storage potential. The coastal location is on the eastern edge of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and will provide essential direct access to seawater for the DAC process while a 20MW solar farm will power operations. The site's position above the Horton Group geologic formation - consisting of fractured shale and sandstone capped by Windsor evaporites - enables direct CO2 injection and storage for >1000 years. By repurposing former industrial land, the project leverages existing infrastructure while supporting regional economic development.
2. Direct Air Capture + Carbon Neutral Fuels: The Technology
Aeon Blue's proprietary seawater reactor technology uses solar-powered electrolysis to generate both hydrogen and a sodium hydroxide CO2 capture solution. This solution efficiently absorbs CO2 from air using a capture tower, requiring minimal energy input due to sodium hydroxide's natural absorption properties. 25% of the air-captured CO2 is combined with the hydrogen to make drop-in eNatural Gas for the local community, while the remaining 75% (6,800 net tonnes/yr) is compressed for geologic storage.
3. The Horton Group Formation: Deep Earth Storage
The Horton Group formation provides an ideal natural vault for permanent CO2 storage, featuring layers of fractured shale and sandstone sealed by impermeable Windsor evaporites. Located directly beneath the facility, this geological structure has been validated by global EPC Black & Veatch, a leader in carbon storage. With its well-studied storage capacity and natural sealing properties, the formation enables secure, long-term carbon sequestration.
4. Our Validation Story: Building Trust
Aeon Blue's innovative technology has earned validation from leading institutions across industry and academia, including Los Alamos National Laboratory, two DOE-backed DAC programs (IgniteX by Black & Veatch & DAC Pioneers by AirMiners), the Research Triangle Institute, the Verschuren Centre, and Global Energy Mentors, a collective of over 50 industry experts. Aeon Blue’s technology has been published in the peer-reviewed journal “Energy Conversion and Management” and the company debuted its technology for industry in 2023, performing both hydrogen production and Direct Air Capture live for audiences in Europe and the Americas.
5. Where Innovation Meets Climate Science: Our Team
Aeon Blue unites innovators with seasoned climate scientists to deliver next-generation carbon removal solutions. The team combines decades of renewable energy expertise with deep experience in electrochemistry and project development. Founded on the principle of "building a better world than we were given," the company is led by Lark Meadow (CEO), who brings extensive project development and executive leadership experience, and by Deóis Ua Cearnaigh (CTO), who shaped Aeon Blue’s innovative technology over two decades.
Aeon Blue's Direct Air Capture (DAC) + eFuel technology is designed to provide multiple co-benefits and have a robust impact on CO2. Our innovative seawater-based DAC approach offers unique advantages that support both climate action and community development.
1. Environmental Advantages: Nurturing Nature
a. Zero-waste operations: Our facility recycles all process materials, maximizing resource efficiency
b. Renewable energy integration: Powered by 20MW on-site solar farm, the facility supports clean energy infrastructure
c. Water use: Novel electrolysis reactor uses seawater instead of fresh water, avoiding use of vital fresh water sources
d. Co-products: While performing DAC and carbon sequestration, the facility will also produce eNatural Gas for local use, eRocket Fuel, and distilled water
e. Significant Climate Impact: By integrating DAC + eFuels, we perform both carbon removal + fossil fuel displacement, creating a total carbon impact that goes far beyond removing legacy carbon from the atmosphere
2. Economic Impact: Powering Progress
a. Job creation: 13 permanent skilled positions in clean technology
b. Educational opportunities: Student internships through local universities
c. Regional development: Supporting Nova Scotia's transition to a clean technology hub
d. Infrastructure development: Building renewable energy and clean technology capabilities in the region
3. Building Together: Community Benefits
a. Indigenous engagement: Priority hiring for Mi'kmaq First Nations
b. Community resources: Providing distilled water for local use
c. Educational partnership: Collaboration with local universities for workforce development
d. Skills development: Training programs in clean technology operations
e. Regional revitalization: Converting former industrial land into a clean technology facility
4. A Breath of Fresh Air: Health Impacts
a. Air quality: Direct Air Capture reduces CO2 as well as other greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change
b. Clean fuel transition: Displacement of fossil fuels with carbon-neutral eNatural Gas and eRocket Fuel reduces harmful emissions including carcinogens
Looking Forward: Future Impact
Our seawater-based approach offers a unique model for combining carbon removal with sustainable development, offering unprecedented scaling potential that can be deployed globally from the coast to the middle of the desert. This first facility demonstrates how coastal communities can transform industrial sites into clean technology hubs while supporting local development. By 2030, we aim to expand to multiple locations, each facility adapted to local conditions while maintaining our core commitment to zero-waste operations, community benefits, permanent carbon storage, and fossil fuel displacement. This scalable approach could unlock carbon removal on the gigaton-level while generating clean fuels, fresh water, and economic opportunities worldwide.
