Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about AgroCCS, Varanasi

AgroCCS B.V. is developing a project in the Varanasi region of Uttar Pradesh, India, that aims to convert agricultural waste (rice husks and straw) into biochar using advanced pyrolysis technology. The biochar will be distributed to the farmers and used as a soil amendment. This process of converting agricultural waste into biochar will benefit farmers and local communities by improving soil health, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers, increasing water retention, and reducing air pollution by replacing the practice of open field burning. The site in Varanasi will be equipped with Beston BST-50 pyrolysis technology capable of processing 15 cubic meters of agricultural residue per hour. Based on the parameters of the project’s planned operations, the annual CO2 removal potential of the project is an average 11,544 tonnes. Local farmers will be the primary users of biochar, which will be provided free of charge to promote soil health and sustainability in agricultural practices. The project's financial model is based on the revenue generated through the sale of carbon credits. AgroCCS B.V. will sell the carbon credits issued under the Puro.Earth carbon removal standard. The project requires carbon credit financing to operate.

Improved Air Quality and Health:
By preventing the open burning of rice husks and straw, the project reduces particulate matter pollution (PM2.5), improving air quality and mitigating associated health risks for local communities.

Enhanced Food Security:
Biochar application improves soil fertility, increases water retention, and enhances crop yields, strengthening food security for smallholder farmers.

Climate Adaptation and Resilience:
Supports farmers in adapting to climate challenges by improving soil structure, enabling better crop resilience against drought and extreme weather.

Economic Development:
By subsidizing biochar, the project lowers input costs for farmers and enhances their yields, boosting economic stability for rural agricultural communities.

Sustainable Agricultural Practices:
Promotes the use of biochar as a natural soil amendment, reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers and supporting long-term sustainable farming practices.
