Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Ararat Bioenergy (Stage 1)

The Ararat Bioenergy project is a multi-stage mono-digestion infrastructure asset, designed to leverage utility-scale biogas from lignocellulosic agricultural waste into biomethane for grid injection and biogenic carbon dioxide into various carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) opportunities. Amongst other products to be delivered via a PtX pathway, the Stage 1 pilot project aims to demonstrate Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) in Australia for the first time, leveraging a partnership with the CO2CRC's Otway International Test Centre (OITC), located just over 1 hour away by truck. This is one of the world's most established CCS facilities, successfully operating for over 20 years and safely sequestering >100,000t of CO2 via their world-class R&D platform. Overall, the platform that this trial represents offers a route to net drawdown of atmospheric CO2, while also displacing fossil gas used in industrial applications and gas power generation.

In addition to SDG 13 Climate Action recognition, during audit phase we will also explore qualification under SDG 2.4 (Zero Hunger - Sustainable Food Production and Resilient Agricultural Practices), 7.2 (Affordable & Clean Energy - Renewable Energy) & 9.4 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure - Upgrade all Industries and Infrastructures for Sustainability) also.

The co-benefits of the BECCS activity are numerous but are broadly described as:
- providing a mechanism to avoid crop stubble burn off & and incentivising beneficial use of excess waste in the cereal cropping sector
- lowering the emissions footprint of the cereal supply chain
- diversifying farm incomes and supporting the payment of royalties for use of stubble
- establishing a certification precedent for BECCS in Australia
