Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Costa Rica 1

CarboHeroes will remove up to 0.5 gigatons of CO2 from the atmosphere by 2050 through a circular economy model based on production and application of biochar, which is explicitly highlighted as key carbon removal technology with several co-benefits to fight climate change by IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – a body of the UN) and UNFCCC.
Biochar will be incorporated into the soil, increasing its health while at the same time sequestering massive amounts of carbon. In this way we combine sustainable agriculture with a significant carbon reduction effect by using agricultural waste.
Biochar is produced by thermal carbonization (“Pyrolysis”) and is one outstanding way of establishing circular agricultural models. Biochar’s porous structure and internal surface area enable it to store water and nutrients and bind pollutants. In addition, a significant amount of the carbon of the source material remains stable the long term, effectively removing CO2 from the atmosphere.
The first module of the scalable business is planned in Costa Rica. We have secured an annual amount of >80,000 tons wood residue as input material for the pyrolysis process. Furthermore, we can access a multiple of tons per year from the coffee, pineapple, and sugarcane industry.
We will help companies achieving their net-zero goals in creating, issuing, and trading high-quality carbon credits with the permanent fixation of the carbon in the soil. In addition, there are numerous applications for biochar in markets inside and outside agriculture that make processes and products more environmentally friendly and sustainable. The business model is based on the massively growing carbon credit market in the first phase, supplemented by selling into biochar application cases in the second phase. Of course, the usage (& sales) of thermal energy is considered in all phases.
The company's impact is manifold. In collaboration with local farmers, we significantly contribute to the fight against climate change while ensuring the production of high-quality food. We secure living spaces and create additional jobs.

CarboHeroes' activity in Costa Rica will have a positive impact on the communities in the region, especially for people working in the timber industry and for those involved in agriculture.
By avoiding the burning of wood waste, we will have a direct impact on the air quality of the area and the health of its inhabitants.
The use of biochar in agriculture improves water retention in the soil, thus reducing the need for irrigation. In addition, biochar acts as a fertiliser, so that eutrophication of water due to chemical fertilisers will be reduced or eliminated. This will increase the quantity and quality of groundwater. Since soil fertility is enhanced by the use of biochar, yields will improve.
The production of biochar through pyrolysis produces clean energy, which we will use in our processes, but the surplus will supply clean energy to the area.
Our plant will help the economic growth of the region by creating direct employment and improving the yield of agricultural fields where biochar is applied.
Ultimately, the co-benefits of CarboHeroes' activity are absolutely in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
