Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about North Star

North Star is a Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) carbon removal project located in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada.

The new carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility will capture biogenic emissions from the existing MLTC Bioenergy Centre, which produces renewable heat and power from sustainably-sourced waste biomass generated by the NorSask Forest Products sawmill.

The captured biogenic CO2 will be transported via pipeline to a nearby geological storage site where it will be injected for permanent storage into the Basal Cambrian Sandstone formation. The entire CCS process will be operated by Carbon Alpha (a Svante company) and co-owned with Meadow Lake Tribal Council, who represent nine First Nations in NW Saskatchewan.

The project is currently in the design phase and is planned to be operational in 2029. Approximately 90,000 CORCs will be available annually once the project is operational.

In addition to permanent technology-based CDR, this project delivers valuable co-benefits to the nearby communities. This includes numerous construction related jobs and full-time employment opportunities over the operational life of the project.

When operational, the capture process further removes particulates from the flue gas of the Bioenergy Centre. This will continue to improve air quality which was drastically improved when the Bioenergy Center furnace recently replaced a traditional beehive burner at the sawmill.

Revenues from the project will generate new income streams that will add value to support MLTC’s existing facilities and support the local forestry-based economy in Meadow Lake.

The Meadow Lake Tribal Council’s revenues will support local communities by fostering local economic growth and enhancing on-reserve education, healthcare, youth and elder programs, housing and other community social and infrastructure needs.
