project milestones
Certification journey
We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.
The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.
The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.
Development status
We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.
The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.
The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.
The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.
The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Novocarbo Ruhr/Tyssenkrupp
Carbon removal through our industrial integration with thyssenkrupp rothe erde. We convert biogenic residues to biochar, sequestering atmospheric carbon and utilizing it in soil- & industrial applications. Our large-scale process removes carbon from the atmosphere and replaces fossil carbons in circular economy concepts and securely removes carbon from the natural cycle for centuries.
Novocarbo leverages a breadth of knowledge and experience to lead the way to develop a strong and sustainable biochar industry. We are a leading operator of pyrolysis plants and an international trading platform for biochar and its derivatives. Novocarbo draws from an extensive network of strong partnerships and collaboration with research institutions to push the frontiers in biochar applications.
Our highly customizable biochar solutions can be used across a number of industries, such as soil amendment, water treatment and as an additive to decarbonize industrial products such as sustainable building materials or textiles. We provide biochar solutions to various green city projects and construction sites throughout Europe.
At thyssenkrupp rothe erde’s production site in Lippstadt, Novocarbo is integrating the first industrial carbonisation plant for regenerative heat right in the centre of Germany’s historically important industrial area: the Ruhr region. To achieve this, thyssenkrupp rothe erde is partnering up with Novocarbo for the entire production process: from the correct operation of the pyrolysis plant to the marketing and distribution of the biochar and the certification of the carbon sinks.
Novocarbo’s expertise in carbon removal, biochar, and heat production long with thyssenkrupp rothe erde’s leading market position makes the cooperation between the companies from the old and new economy a lighthouse project for the redesign of heat infrastructure concepts. The provision of regenerative heat embedded in a sustainable, circular business case is an important pillar of an independent and crisis-proof supply for industry. At the same time, the additional ecological effects of negative emissions and the sustainable use of biochar contribute to the development of benefits for society far beyond the project horizon.
This is our second carbon removal site where we have a direct industrial integration in place with Tyssenkrupp Rothe Erde for green heat distribution and biochar production
The incorporation of the material into industrial value chains allows for compensating CO2 emissions by insetting Our manufacturing process technology is state of the art: Once activated, the auto thermal process nearly runs on its own and requires just marginal additional energy input which we source from renewable energies, resulting in a CO2-negative production process. Excess heat and energy are fed into the grid or in this case in to the processes of thyssenkrupp rothe erde's facility energy network. With our biochar, we improve the CO2 balances of products by distinctively tailoring and incorporating our materials into products. Our process ensures the highest product quality and integrity through compliance with internationally accepted standards such as the European Biochar Consortium (EBC) standard.
Biochar added to compost results in methane reductions during the process. It further reduces nitrous oxide emissions, nitrate, and phosphorus leakage, helps to reduce the utilization of mineral fertilizers and therefore protects water, and soil and boosts biodiversity.
