Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about ReGenerate Livermore Falls, LLC

ReGenerate is a bioenergy company focused on converting low-value wood residues from local logging and wood products industries into renewable power and biochar. ReGenerate harvests its high-quality, high-carbon biochar from its bioenergy facility located in Livermore Falls, Maine which also produces ~284,000 MWh of renewable energy annually. The biochar produced is deployed as sustainable landfill cover, and the ReGenerate team is exploring additional local applications, which could include soil amendment, water filtration, and environmental remediation.

Significant independent research and studies are being conducted to explore the many beneficial applications of biochar. ReGenerate will look to collaborate with our established partners in our academic community to further pursue local applications. Our biochar undergoes regular testing and has a total organic carbon content of 82-85% and hydrocarbon ratio results ranging from 0.16-0.29. Both statistics are indicative of a very stable biochar that is suitable for carbon sequestration and long-term soil improvement which could provide benefits to the agricultural community.

ReGenerate’s biochar production supports the local economy surrounding our facility by providing an outlet for low grade wood, sawmill residue, and other wood waste products. Those purchases support logging, forest landowners, and other secondary forest product industries (e.g. sawmill and pulp / paper). The wood waste converted to biochar would otherwise end up decaying in woods or in low value wood waste applications such as landscaping. ReGenerate provides high-quality employment at our facility and through our supplier network.

In 2020, the Livermore Falls Facility was awarded a contract to sell a portion of its electricity to Central Maine Power. The award considered the various state benefits the facility provided, including capital investments, purchases of goods and services, taxes paid to Maine jurisdictions, purchases of wood fuel, and Maine-based jobs. In the first three years of the contract (2021-2023), the Livermore Falls Facility provided an economic benefit value of $61.2 million, which was 16% higher than the amount bid into the contract.
