Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Tapovanam Biochar – Prakruthi

Tapovanam Biochar – Prakruthi is a climate-positive initiative that transforms crop residues, primarily cotton stalks, into biochar — a stable form of carbon that can be stored safely in soil for centuries. The project tackles the widespread challenge of residue burning by turning agricultural waste into a valuable product that enriches soil, enhances water retention, and improves long-term farm productivity. Our biochar is produced through a clean and energy-efficient pyrolysis process, where the gases released are reused to power the system itself, minimizing emissions. The resulting biochar is further developed into a biofertilizer that supports regenerative agriculture and reduces dependence on chemical inputs. Beyond removing carbon from the atmosphere, Prakruthi contributes to rural livelihoods by creating a new income stream for farmers and promoting circular economy practices. The project reflects Tapovanam’s vision to build sustainable, low-carbon farming systems while contributing meaningfully to global carbon removal and soil restoration goals.

1. Improved Soil Health & Farmer Yields: Field trials with farmers within a 30 km radius of the facility to demonstrate improved soil organic carbon, moisture retention, and crop yields by applying biochar-amended compost tailored to local soil needs.

2. Agro-waste Management: The facility converts ~4,000 tons of post-harvest cotton stalks annually into biochar and bio-oil, reducing open burning, which is a local issue during cotton harvest seasons.

3. Job Creation in Rural Telangana: The plant provides year-round employment to ~20 rural workers including feedstock handlers, reactor operators, and biochar collectors, with skills training provided.

4. Renewable Energy Use: After initial startup, the pyrolysis reactor runs fully on syngas generated from the feedstock itself. This energy is also used to power the plant operations and lighting, minimizing grid dependence.

5. Reduction in Local Air Pollution: By diverting crop residues from burning and using clean syngas for process energy, the project contributes to improved air quality in surrounding villages.
