Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Sequest Horizon

About Sequest

Sequest is pioneering hyper-arid biomass storage. We preserve the carbon that nature has already captured through photosynthesis by keeping biomass dry in the world's most arid deserts, where decomposition is halted and carbon is locked out of the atmosphere. The result is carbon removal, delivered at industrial scale.

The principle is well-established: organic matter has survived for millennia in hyper-arid environments. For example, date palm material has been preserved in Egyptian tombs for roughly 3,000 years. Sequest industrialises this proven mechanism with engineering and discipline.

How it works

Sequest sources agricultural residues and other by-products that would otherwise be burned or left to decay. The biomass is dried and placed in engineered, above-ground chambers protected by a patent-pending cover system. The hyper-arid environment does the heavy lifting, while the engineered chamber handles residual environmental risk. The result is dry conditions that prevent decomposition and avoid methane formation, keeping the carbon locked out of the atmosphere for 100+ years.

Supporting the physical operation is a data and analytics layer spanning site selection, biomass sourcing, chamber design, and MRV. Site locations are identified through geospatial analysis across climate, logistics, and land-use variables; chamber design is refined through computational modelling; and storage conditions are tracked by sensors feeding a digital MRV platform.

What makes Sequest different

The system is deliberately simple. There is no novel chemistry, no energy-intensive processing, and no complex infrastructure - only mature industrial capabilities: biomass handling, earthworks, engineered covers, and monitoring.

The solution works with nature rather than around it. In hyper-arid regions the ambient environment does most of the work of halting decomposition while the engineered cover system handles the residual risk. The result is resilient carbon removal, by environment and design.

A facility can be built and operational within months, and capacity grows by repeating a modular design. Simplicity is what lets durable removal be built, measured, financed, and scaled quickly.

The Horizon facility

Horizon is Sequest's first commercial facility, located in Saudi Arabia. It will source regional agricultural residues and deploy a chamber design developed and refined through the company's test site. Credits will be issued under Puro.earth's Terrestrial Storage of Biomass (TSB) methodology.

The Future

Sequest's Horizon facility is just the starting point. Additional facilities will follow, and supply chain optimisation compounds as the network expands. The ambition is at-scale durable carbon removal, built through disciplined repetition of a proven template.

The primary benefit is durable carbon removal. Credits are issued only after subtracting supply-chain and process emissions, so each credit represents a genuine net removal from the atmosphere.

Beyond removal, the project diverts agricultural residue away from open-field burning, a significant source of particulate pollution with serious effects on human health.

Additionally, the Horizon facility will create direct local employment across construction, operations, and monitoring. Biomass suppliers - primarily farmers and aggregators - gain a revenue stream for a by-product that previously had no commercial value.
