The growth of local populations of carbon-fixing, microscopic algae is enhanced in carefully selected sites in the open ocean on environmentally friendly and non-hazardous substrate particles. These are engineered to float near-surface before sinking in a controlled manner, mimicking the natural export of organic carbon and permanently sequestering the biomass in the deep ocean.
