Certification journey

We track the progress of a carbon removal project through our certification framework. This roadmap moves from a preliminary assessment of eligibility toward full certification under the Puro Standard.

The facility has successfully completed the preliminary assessment conducted by the Puro team, meeting the minimum criteria for listing as a future supplier on Puro.earth.

The facility has passed the third-party facility audit, verifying compliance with the methodology, as well as output audit, verifying the net volume of removed carbon. The facility has been issued CORCs and continues its removal operations, as well as monitoring and reporting to Puro.earth.

Development status

We monitor a facility’s maturity as it moves toward industrial-scale operations. This status identifies whether a project is in development, under construction, or actively removing carbon from the atmosphere.

The feasibility study is ongoing. The Supplier is still collecting data to prove the concept.

The front-end engineering and design are ready and methodology compliant. There is a clear plan to monitor and measure. The LCA is up to the needed quality level or subject to small improvements. The technology has been used before. There are commercial agreements with the relevant business partners of the facility.

The facility is fully funded and is being implemented. Relevant infrastructure is being built.

The facility is operating as a carbon removal facility.

More about Usinas Itamarati S.A.

Uisa is one of the largest and most integrated biorefineries in Brazil. It operates using a business model that transforms renewable raw materials and their byproducts into food, biofuels, clean energy, organic fertilizers, and animal feed products. Located in Mato Grosso, with a strong commercial presence in the Midwest and North regions of the country, its philosophy is to maximize sustainability, reducing the environmental impacts of its processes through the full use of biomass, promoting a positive social impact in the communities where it operates. Uisa generates more than 3,000 jobs and has strong social partnerships. It supports Florescer Ação Social, an institution that develops projects focused on the human, social, educational, and cultural development of children, adolescents, and adults in the communities of Denise, Nova Olímpia, and the Assari District, in Barra do Bugres, Mato Grosso.
As part of its efforts to become a decarbonization platform in the heart of Brazil, Uisa is implementing a bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) project integrated with its bioethanol production to capture the highly concentrated biogenic CO2 stream. After concentration and dehydration, the CO2 will be transported to a future injection site in the Parecis Basin, located approximately 25 km from Uisa's industrial facilities. The project is currently in the final geological investigation phase, with well drilling efforts expected to begin soon, with full operation expected in 2029. Approximately 260,000 tons of CO2 will be stored annually, considering the plant's current capacity, with the potential for injection of up to 550,000 tons of CO2, considering future expansions. By producing biofuels (i.e. ethanol and biomethane) with integrated BECCS, Uisa will provide high-integrity carbon credits for hard-to-abate sectors and/or for the production of carbon-negative biofuels, the latter upon retirement of the corresponding credits by Uisa.

The project directly contributes to the mitigation of climate change and the decarbonization of the Brazilian energy matrix. In a global perspective, this project also enables the production of cutting-edge bioenergy solutions to be used in aviation and maritime transportation, reducing the environmental footprint of vital logistic chains. In addition to its direct benefits, the project already supports the creation of jobs in a remote region in Brazil during seismic investigation, engineering design, and construction efforts for wells, pipeline and capture plant, besides generating direct and indirect positions during its operation, thus further supporting local economy and Uisa social projects developed with Florescer. Uisa BECCS project will also promote the production of low-carbon biofuels based on regenerative agriculture practices in combination with engineered industrial solutions, thus supporting local producers that sustainably supply biomass to Uisa.
